I bought this book for my father at Christmas time last year. He was in the Marine Corps and said that when reading the book it brought back great memories he had with his Marine Corp buddies. He liked it because it is based on true stories and memories of other Marines.

About the Author
Raymond A. Serway (PhD, Illinois Institute of Technology) is Professor Emeritus at James Madison University. His honors and awards include an honorary doctorate degree from his alma mater, Utica College, the 1990 Madison Scholar Award at James Madison University, the Distinguished Teaching Award at Clarkson University in 1977, and the Alumni Achievement Award from Utica College in 1985. As Guest Scientist at the IBM Research Laboratory in Zurich, Switzerland, he worked with K. Alex Müller, 1987 Nobel Prize recipient. He was a visiting scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, where he collaborated with his mentor and friend, the late Sam Marshall. Dr. Serway is the coauthor of COLLEGE PHYSICS, Eleventh Edition; PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, Ninth Edition; PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS, Fifth Edition; ESSENTIALS OF COLLEGE PHYSICS; MODERN PHYSICS, Third Edition; and the high school textbook PHYSICS, published by Holt McDougal. He has published more than 40 research papers in the field of condensed matter physics and has given more than 60 presentations at professional meetings.

John W. Jewett, Jr., earned his undergraduate degree in physics at Drexel University and his doctorate at Ohio State University, specializing in optical and magnetic properties of condensed matter. Dr. Jewett began his academic career at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, where he taught from 1974 to 1984. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Physics at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Through his teaching career, Dr. Jewett has been active in promoting science education. In addition to receiving four National Science Foundation grants, he helped found and direct the Southern California Area Modern Physics Institute (SCAMPI) and Science IMPACT (Institute for Modern Pedagogy and Creative Teaching). Dr. Jewett's honors include the Stockton Merit Award at Richard Stockton College in 1980, selection as Outstanding Professor at California State Polytechnic University for 1991-1992, and the Excellence in Undergraduate Physics Teaching Award from the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) in 1998. In 2010, he received an Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award from Drexel University in recognition of his contributions in physics education. He has given over 100 presentations both domestically and abroad, including multiple presentations at national meetings of the AAPT. Dr. Jewett is the author of THE WORLD OF PHYSICS: MYSTERIES, MAGIC, AND MYTH, which provides many connections between physics and everyday experiences. In addition to his work on PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, he is the coauthor for PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS, Fifth Edition, as well as GLOBAL ISSUES, a four-volume set of instruction manuals in integrated science for high school. Dr. Jewett enjoys playing keyboard with his all-physicist band, traveling, and collecting antique quack medical devices that can be used as demonstration apparatus in physics lectures. They should not be allowed to call this a solutions manual

When I was trying to buy this on amazon, I thought I was buying a solutions manual, as stated in the title. Looking back in the description it says it only has 20% of the questions answered, but I did not see this. So if you are looking for a solutions manual DO NOT BUY THIS. For example chapter 2 in the actual textbook has 85 problems (counting end of chapter problems alone, not additional examples). This solution manual provides answers for 16 of those end of chapter problems. Yes, its solutions are helpful for those selected problems, but most of the problems it works out are odd numbers, which have the answers in the back of the book anyway. I have a solutions manual for my organic chemistry textbook and it has every single question worked out, cost the same amount as this book, and is only one volume. The fact that they could not even work out 16 problems of every chapter without trying to charge you more money baffles me. If you want to buy this for the "study guide" sure i guess. I don't know how helpful it would be, but maybe it would be for you.

to further prove how terrible this book is as a solutions manual here is the number of textbook questions / solutions answered in book for a couple more chapters:

CH 3: 85 / 13
CH 4: 89 / 17
CH 5: 104 / 20

I actually do not understand how they are legally allowed to sell this as a solutions manual.

The item came as described and on time. The only problem with the book is the book only explains selected questions. It did help my solve problems they were assigned but would be more beneficial if it included explanations to more questions.

About the Author
David W. Oxtoby became the ninth president of Pomona College on July 1, 2003. An internationally noted chemist, he previously served as dean of physical sciences at the University of Chicago. At Pomona, he holds a coterminous appointment as president and professor of chemistry. Before coming to Pomona, he was associated with the University of Chicago for nearly three decades, with brief interludes to serve as a visiting professor at such places as the University of Paris; the University of Bristol in Great Britain; and the University of Sydney in Australia. Oxtoby is a fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. After earning his bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, from Harvard University, he went on to earn his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. As a research chemist, he is author or co-author of more than 165 scientific articles on such subjects as light scattering, chemical reaction dynamics and phase transitions. In addition to co-authoring Principles of Modern Chemistry and Chemistry: Science of Change, he has received fellowships from the Guggenheim, von Humboldt, Dreyfus, Sloan, Danforth and National Science foundations.

Wade A. Freeman completed a B.S. degree in Chemistry with distinction at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and earned his Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry at the University of Michigan. At the University of Illinois, Chicago he has been an assistant dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, worked as an academic adviser for undergraduates, and directed the general chemistry program. His work in chemical education includes running the "Gifted Summer Institutes in Chemistry" for high-achieving high school students and annually administering and teaching a series of Summer Institutes for high school teachers. He was a co-founder in 1994 of the Chicago Chemistry Van Project, which delivers specialized equipment and other support to Chicago high school chemistry laboratories.In 1986 he collaborated with David Oxtoby and Norman Nachtrieb to write Chemistry: Science of Change. Freeman is a member of the Board of Directors of the UIC Institute for Mathematics and Science Education, and a member of the University Affiliate Advisory Panel of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. He has also served on multiple external evaluation panels for high school and university programs.

Toby Block was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and received her BS in chemistry (cum laude) from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. She earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry (with an inorganic minor) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She was an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point teaching introductory chemistry, physical chemistry, and inorganic chemistry before joining the staff of the Georgia Institute of Technology as a laboratory coordinator in 1980. At Georgia Tech, Block supervises the work of teaching assistants in the introductory chemistry laboratories and lectures to introductory chemistry classes. She chaired the 1990 Biennial Conference on Chemical Education at Georgia Tech campus. Toby Block is also an author of LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS IN GENERAL CHEMISTRY, Fourth Edition.

My advice, get a separate book to supplement

As one reviewer said, the book is trying to be simple. Some of the examples are so simple that they don't even test you're learning. And the more challenging examples seem to come out of nowhere. Also the organization is slightly convoluted and a little hard to follow with a full understanding. I recommend attaining another chem book to supplement this one if you must get this for a class. I personally found this book to be so confusing.

Very disorganized compared to other Chemistry texts.

The book was written by one of my teachers here at Georgia Tech. The book went into depth on many things, but some of their explanations were confusing to me. Their organization was very weird in the way they taught the subject. I would recommend another text to go along with it if you find this one a little confusing.

Interesting and Easy Read

The book arrived quickly and in brand new, perfect condition. So far, I have read the first two chapters of this book for a class I am taking. The book is interesting, easy to follow, and full of helpful information. The real case studies included at the end of each chapter are great to read, though the author leaves the ending open for the student to propose solutions. The book's appendix has several helpful resources such as steps to analyze case studies/business problems and sample business letters, memos, and other written communications.

Ok, so I made the mistake of early adopting Windows 10 before the first inevitable service pack release. Thank God and Marc for this book. I can't believe just how open the Win 10 default privacy settings are.

Great Windows 10 security do-it-yourself guide

This is another one of the Mintz "Practical Paranoia" books that has no peer. We use both Mac and PC platforms in our business, as well as i-Phones and Google phones, and we try to protect our data as much as possible without paying for full-time IT support. For less than the cost of one consultant hour, a Practical Paranoia book is a great tool, enabling us to set up our devices ourselves while learning more about what makes them secure or not. This Practical Paranoia version for Windows 10 is great because not only is it really easy to follow with all those screenshots and down-to-earth English, but it goes beyond telling how to secure PC applications and data. It includes instructions on how to encrypt the voice and video-conference conversations that we conduct using PCs. When working with clients online, it's a good idea to encrypt the discussions to protect sensitive business data. Why make it easy for competitors to hack us? I was especially impressed when my office had a question about one of the topics, and Marc Mintz himself promptly replied to our email to explain the right thing to do.

Great as a Textbook!

Eye Opening

This book helped me reverse my prolapse. My doctor could not believe that I had done this with just some simple exercises and posture recommendations. I truly recommend this book over surgery!!

Not objective, too much fear for me

I am a retired RN and have a prolapse. This book, at first, seemed like 'the answer'. But the bottom line is that it is, at best, only a theory and an answer - not 'the' answer. The book is so totally single-minded and fails to acknowledge that for each individual, there may be varying solutions. It is the ultimate, "It's my way or the highway" and this is not healthy, physically or mentally, for many women suffering with the concerns of prolapse.

I must vote for more common sense and for questioning a theory shared by the author and her followers, without regard to the years of science and practice, which allow for other solutions.

I agree with the author on one main point: surgery should not be the first choice and surgery has a very poor track record of success for prolapse. However the author is totally biased against hysterectomy and it simply is not fair to terrify people about hysterectomy. Again, not my first choice, but hysterectomy is not the terrifying picture she presents. Everything in moderation would be helpful here. I speak from experience and from the many women I worked with and know, the fear she engenders is simply not justified, and in my humble opinion is a way of pushing her theory and her products and books.

Saved from surgery

I bought this book 2 years ago when I was told I needed surgery for my pelvic prolapse. I've followed many of the suggestions found in this excellent book and am completely comfortable with my body as it is now. The prolapse has improved so that it is now easy to live with. The posture changes helped the most.
