This book is designed as a "user's guide" for individuals engaged in psychotherapy as well as for therapists and the general population. It endeavors to teach the reader how to embrace the so called "dark emotions" through a process that I call Integrative Mindful Exposure (IME). The basic premise of the book is that much of human suffering and symptoms are the product of our attempts to control and avoid these difficult emotions. Methodologies to help embrace fear/anxiety, shame, and anger are offered. Personal growth and liberation requires learning tools to directly embrace these avoided experiences.
Integrative Mindful Exposure is a conceptual and practical therapeutic model that the author developed over twenty years of conducting psychotherapy that integrates behavioral exposure based approaches as well as mindfulness practices. "Attachment theory" and findings from contemporary neuroscience are also incorporated into this model.
The reader will be led on a journey deep into the layers of their emotional lives. The topography of this inner realm will be revealed as well as the fears, challenges, obstacles and opportunities that emerge as the layers of our avoided emotions are peeled back.

Combining basic principles of classical psychology with Eastern-based religious philosophies, Duvinsky provides an interesting approach to healthy living. Duvinsky combines various elements of psychology, Buddhist teachings and even components of martial arts to form a treatment that he claims can promote physical and mental well-being. The author contends that the human desire to control situations and emotions engenders most common psychological issues. His process to avoid this psychological unease involves imagining losing control and allowing the resulting emotions to emerge unchecked. The book is written for the layperson, but without familiarity with the terms used in the book, the text can quickly become confusing. Fortunately, the guide begins with a glossary. Each chapter describes a particular problem—control, fear, anger, shame, the last a construct not often mentioned by therapists—and presents topical case studies. Every chapter provides concrete exercises, allowing the reader to put theory into practice. The case studies are of particular note, providing insight and clarity to the author’s methodologies. They are also entertaining. When a professor, suffering from a fear of public speaking came to the author. His dilemma was traced back to an incident in his childhood when he was forced to push a wheelbarrow of pig manure through his village. By reliving this event in exquisite detail and facing his fear and shame, he was finally able to rid himself of it. Throughout the book, the author quotes from and explains how his methods derive from various psychological constructs and belief systems. About the Author
Born and raised in the Bronx, New York, Jerry D. Duvinsky earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from Binghamton University. He was commissioned to coordinate a new behavioral medicine program at the West Los Angeles Veteran Affairs Medical Center. For much of his career, he has served at a private multidisciplinary behavioral health center which he cofounded and where he continues his practice. He also provides clinical supervision for psychology graduate students at Binghamton University. He has published original research and for many years he also was a reviewer for the American Journal of Psychiatry. A longtime student of Buddhist philosophy and Eastern meditation practices, he holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. He is married with four children.

A fantastic guide and fun read

This is not a self-help book. This book will not seduce the curious reader with a quick-fix formula to relief or identity. Dr. Duvinsky offers a simple yet radical approach to health and well-being based on the foundational studies of psychology conducted in the 20th century. The book itself is a pleasure to read: challenging the reader with concrete exercises, providing gentle motivation and guidance based on sardonic humor and the telling `success' stories of former clients. Both the trained clinician and struggling `client' will take with them a better sense of themselves, humanity, and means of actively engaging in life. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and return to it often for encouragement and support.

to be or not to be (in control)

In "Ordinary People", a hugely popular Oscar-winning movie in the 80ies, the main character asks his therapist to help him be "more in control". This was also my goal when I entered therapy. I wanted to shut out my negative feelings or, at the very least, assume a Stoic attitude: look cool on the outside even when boiling inside. This did not work for me. It did not make me feel either secure or free. The seemingly much more `dangerous' alternative, less control, the holding of negative feelings, and a willing proximity to possible pain has been difficult but much more liberating. In my view, this is an honest book with an effective message written by a wonderful therapist.

An incredibly useful book

I am a graduate student working on my MSW, as well as a patient receiving clinical therapy for issues of depression and anxiety. I found this book to be remarkable in that it can be used by practicing clinicians to enhance their therapeutic skills, and at the same time is extremely useful for an individual seeking a path to internal peace. The author does a great job of making the topic easy to understand for anybody, whether they have had experience in therapy or not. The techniques he provides are explained fully and very beneficial. I have also found that, as a result of reading this book, it is influencing me as a father of a young daughter. I am more aware of how she perceives the world and how the things that I say when she's experiencing emotions effect the way she learns to deal or not deal with emotions, and what I can do to prevent issues from developing later on in her life. A very well written and insightful book that can help all those who read it.

The best Buddhist introduction I have found

This book is exactly what its title suggests - a quick paced introduction to Buddhism for people who have busy lives.

The author was living in the corporate world, and ended up stumbling into Buddhism.

His story is inspiring, and subtly weaves the core Buddhist teachings into the story. The way this is done makes the teachings very accessible and relevant to Western people, especially those with similar issues of living in the corporate rat-race.

It is fair to say that this book has changed my life, it has led me to read many other texts, but I still return to this one from time to time for a re-charge.

I would recommend this without reservation to anyone with the vaguest interest in Buddhism, and also anyone who feels there must be more to life than what they are currently experiencing.

Loving David Michie

I got this for a foundational understanding of Buddhism and was led to David by his fiction works "The DL's Cat" and it's sequel "The Art of Purring" - (and am now wishing and waiting for the next installment of this WONDERFUL story!). David has a fantastic way of explaining how even the most basic precepts of Buddhism can fit into anyone's life. This delightful narrative not only underscores what most have no clue about, he also gives the day to day application of the principles. In essence it is not so much a religion (as misleading as the 'ism' is at the end of the name) as a philosophy of life. Even the Dali Lama himself has said, you don't need to become a Buddhist to use and apply what you learn that appeals to you, speaks to your soul. David takes this step further by using everyday examples, traffic, rude people, the never ending rise of annoyance that is a part of almost every life. He teaches simple tools and applications for everyday life (hence the title!). You don't have to 'contemplate your navel' to understand the principles of Buddhism, but learning how to meditate is a core instruction. One which can lower your blood pressure, reduce your cortisol levels, raise your happiness and patience and extend your life. This is a book that should be read by every human being in every country. I have purchased the audio as I listen to it daily to keep the information and application fresh. This man is one of the greatest gifts - he speaks beautifully, describes simply and relates completely the essence of Buddhism and it's applications to every busy life, including yours. Don't wait another day, buy this book or the audio CD and find peace and purpose in your life. And as a PS, this has NOTHING to do with your own religion. There are millions of Christians (myself included), Lutherans, Jews, Hindu's, Protestants, etc who find their faith deepened, enriched and expanded as a result of these teachings. Jesus went missing for many years and showed up at 30....who's to say that He and Buddha didn't hang for a few years...? I picture a table with all of these prophets/teachers discussing how best to reach every heart in the world with the ultimate and unarguable message of "love one another, you are ALL my children". That's what Buddhism for Busy People is all about, helping you to be the very best you possible. This needs to be on your 'must read and live' list. If everyone did read it and apply it to their lives, we'd instantly have a better world. Instantly.

Missing Pages

The book itself is very helpful. It mostly focuses on the math behind the various statistical tests. I'd have liked if it spent more time talking about the theory behind what that math means. Still, if you're just looking for a book that explains what the different tests do and how to do them, then this book will get the job done. It uses a novel way of calculating ANOVAs though, using what it calls "bracket terms". This approach is pretty simple and time saving, but I think it makes the theoretical reasons for what you're doing less clear. The book also uses it's own set of terms, such as using "Y" to represent individual scores instead of the more common "x" (there's many more examples). If you've taken other stats classes before, this can be really confusing at first.

My big complaint is that my book was missing pages 278-324 out of the center of the book, obvious production error. I think that's a pretty serious lapse in quality control. I don't go through each book I buy looking for missing pages so I didn't realize the omission until chapter 13 suddenly became chapter 15 as I was reading it. Unfortunately, this was after the window for refunds had closed, so I'm stuck with a book missing an entire chapter and half of two others.

Very helpful book

I used this book in a graduate psychology stats course, and it was a very helpful resource throughout. This book is very text heavy, and is meant to read unlike some other books that may be used as-needed to look information up. The text is a little dry (it's stats, after all) but is easy to get through and understand. The examples were helpful to me in conjunction with my course material. This book might have been less helpful to me outside of a class setting, but I highly recommend it for use with a class or for someone looking for a book to read about statistics.

For all of you stats geeks in experimental psychology/behavioral neuroscience, this is a good book to get. It was suggested to me by my stats professor as the bible for experimental design. However, if you are not in this sub-sub-population, then this may not be your kind of book.

Teachings From the Medicine Buddha Retreat is a nearly complete record of the teachings given by Lama Zopa Rinpoche during a twenty-five day Medicine Buddha retreat in the fall of 2001. The sections are short, on topics such as making offerings to the buddhas and the nature of mind. The retreat was held less than two months after the 9/11 attacks, and Lama Zopa's teachings are full of references to terrorism, war, Iraq, and Afghanistan. --BuddhaDharma magazine

About the Author
Lama Zopa Rinpoche was born in Thami, Nepal, in 1946. At the age of three he was recognized as the reincarnation of Sherpa Nyingma yogi, Kunsang Yeshe, the Lawudo Lama. Rinpoche s Thami home was not far from the Lawudo cave, in the Mount Everest region of Nepal, where his predecessor meditated for the last twenty years of his life. Rinpoche s own description of his early years may be found in his book, The Door to Satisfaction (Wisdom Publications). At the age of ten, Rinpoche went to Tibet and studied and meditated at Domo Geshe Rinpoche s monastery near Pagri, until the Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1959 forced him to forsake Tibet for the safety of Bhutan. Rinpoche then went to the Tibetan refugee camp at Buxa Duar, West Bengal, India, where he met Lama Yeshe, who became his closest teacher. The Lamas went to Nepal in 1967, and over the next few years built Kopan and Lawudo Monasteries. In 1971 Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave the first of his famous annual lam-rim retreat courses, which continue at Kopan to this day. In 1974, with Lama Yeshe, Rinpoche began traveling the world to teach and establish centers of Dharma. When Lama Yeshe passed away in 1984, Rinpoche took over as spiritual director of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), which has continued to flourish under his peerless leadership.
