School Principals need to read this!

All principals everywhere need to read this book. In todays world, teachers are blamed for all the wrong things.
It is simple- tell teachers that they make a difference in your school and they will follow you everywhere.
We all need to know our hard efforts make a difference. If you are a teacher- buy this and slip in in your principal's mailbox, perhaps he/ she might read it. Blaming teachers for students not learning is like blaming doctors for people getting sick. Give compliments to teachers- it is powerful!

Own and just bought as a gift!!

I recommend this book for anyone going into administration or a leadership role. Gives excellent ideas on how to show your staff you greatly appreciate them without spending a lot of $$$. Also gives ideas for small, random "thank you's". Educators work very hard to mold successful little people and many times, they are left feeling unappreciated. A little hand written note goes a long way to many people.

Good but it doesn't do the speeches justice

I ordered this book because I wanted to learn what makes a great speech great and it does deliver on that purpose to an extent. The author does a nice job of analyzing the speeches and telling you some of the things that make the speech stand out such as the use of metaphors, repetition, etc. For it deserves at least 3 stars.

I gave it the 4th star because the author did not shy away from analyzing speeches from controversial figures. This is not always the case with books such as these but I feel it is important to learn from those speeches as well and see why nations sometimes fall for these manipulating leaders.

The reason I couldn't give it 5 stars is because it does not show all of the speech being analyzed. This isn't a major issue since anyone can go online and pull up the speeches but it would have been useful to have the speeches in the book itself for notetaking and convenience.

All in all, it's worth picking up if you're interested in the subject but I wish the author had instead picked only 50 speeches, added the entire text of the speeches, and delivered a more detailed analysis of those speeches.

A modern, clear translation of Cicero's most important work

Just the introduction to this work alone is worth the price of the book. It has not only an excellent biography of Cicero, but sections on the role of orators in Roman and Greek life, the role of De Oratore in Cicero's life, and extensive commentary on the content and dialogic, conversational form of the book. The introduction also contains extensive background material on the long-standing quarrel between rhetoricians and philosophers and Cicero's position in it.

The authors start by saying: "When Cicero's contemporaries read his De Oratore (literally On the Orator), finished at the end of 55 BC, many of them must have been surprised." Stepping outside the camps of both the philosophers and rhetoricians, Cicero concentrates on the personal skills of the speaker rather than on rules; and as a practical orator, he repeatedly criticizes the impractical, narrow, and rigid patterns of the rhetoricians.

Before Socrates, scholars generally found that knowledge and rhetoric were the same. Socrates was probably an opponent of rhetoric, and this may have led to his execution by the Athenians. This made some of his pupils, and especially Plato, very hostile to rhetoric. As a result there emerged different institutions for both disciplines. There was the Academy founded by Plato, the Peripatos founded by Aristotle, the Stoics founded by Zeno, and Epicureans, founded by Epicurus. Still 300 years later, in Cicero's time, the rivalry between them was lively and fierce.

Cicero wrote they were all wrong: "The ancients had taught there was an amazing sort of communion between speaking and understanding." Like linguists and other scientists today have found, there is no distinction between thought and language. Cicero wrote that Socrates had made a terrible mistake. Separating words from thoughts was like separating the body from the soul--and just as destructive. He wrote: "Words for a distinguished style are impossible without having produced and shaped the thoughts, and no thought can shine clearly without the enlightening power of words."

The unity of speech and knowledge provides the powerful thrust of Cicero's book. At one point, he asks why there are so few really good speakers. He notes that this is "all the more amazing when the study of the other arts as a rule draws upon abstruse and hidden sources, whereas the procedures of oratory lie within everyone's reach, and are concerned with everyday experience and with human nature and speech." Once the peoples of the empire learned of the Greek writings on rhetoric, they "were filled with an incredible zeal for learning all these things....In addition, there were laid before them, just as they are now, the greatest rewards for this pursuit, in terms of influence, power, and prestige."

"Considering all this, who would not rightly be amazed that, in the entire history of generations, of ages, and of communities, such a slight number of orators would be found? The truth of the matter is, however, that this faculty is something greater, and is a combination of more arts and pursuits, than is generally supposed. ...the only conceivable explanation of this scarcity is surely the incredible scope and difficulty of oratory."

Wide, broad knowledge in many subjects are the best preparation for the ideal orator, along with talent, good technique, and years of practice.

Cicero writes: "To begin with, one must acquire knowledge of a very great number of things, for without this a ready flow of words is empty and ridiculous; the language itself must be shaped, not only by the choice of words, but by their arrangement as well; also required is a thorough acquaintance with all the emotions with which nature has endowed the human race, because in soothing or exciting the feelings of the audience the full force of oratory and all its available means must be brought into play. In addition, it is essential to possess a certain esprit and humor, the culture that befits a gentleman, and an ability to be quick and concise in rebuttal as well as attack, combined with refinement, grace, and urbanity."

Cicero writes: "It is my opinion that an orator worthy of this grand title is he who will speak on any subject that occurs and requires verbal exposition in a thoughtful, well-disposed, and distinguished manner, having accurately memorized his speech, while also displaying a certain dignity of delivery."

It is hard to overestimate the importance and significance of this work in the Western canon. A companion book is "Master Tully: Cicero in Tudor England," which shows the dominance of Cicero in Renaissance England. Cicero had a profound effect on the education of the founders of the U.S. who were brought up on Cicero in both English and Latin. Jefferson had 40 of Cicero's works in his library. John Adams, Lincoln, Twain, and Whitman were all direct descendants of Cicero.

This work should also be read together with Cicero's "Brutus or History of Famous Orators: Also His Orator or Accomplished Speaker," which Cicero had intended to be books 4 and 5 of this work.

As an iOS developer, this book helped me transition into the watchOS world seamlessly. This book help reflect how UITableViews differ from iOS, and details many features described in WWDC 2015/2016 in greater depth and detail.

I particularly liked the animations chapter which showed the various animations that the watchOS supports. Would recommend this book to anyone interested in watchOS, and even those who are interest in iOS, since much of the architectural and code design decisions factor into many areas of iOS development.

But the team leader, Dr. Carter, has assumed Grady is a college student, and when he realizes his mistake, he promptly saddles the boy with all the scut work. Grady masters the chores, then finds time to do his own projects, which include learning to control the movement of plants and trees using sound waves. In the process Grady also discovers something dangerous and evil: unbeknownst to the native peoples and the research team's U.S. benefactors, Dr. Carter is populating the rain forest with genetically engineered poison trees. While this book is aimed at a slightly younger audience than Thomas's previous YA titles, Grady's knowing, flip tone will appeal to Thomas's older teen fans. Grady's botanical talents skirt the fantastic and many readers may find themselves slowed by several discussions of scientific theory. But those who stick with it will find plenty of compelling situations. He has won several science fairs, and his research into the cloning of plants has interested Dr. Phillip Carter, head of the reforestation Embryo Project. When Grady arrives in Brazil, he is relegated to grunt work. In between gathering food, cooking, and cleaning, he investigates Dr. Carters New Forest, a grove of super-growth trees used to reforest a clear-cut area. The secrets he discovers send him fleeing into the wilds, with Dr. Carter hunting him at every turn. Befriended by members of a local tribe, the newly named Green Thumb must fight to stop the deadly Embryo Project and save his own life. Thomas has created a middle-school version of his earlier heroes, a joking smart aleck whose humor draws readers into his world. Too sure of his own intelligence, Grady is bored by school and anyone his own age, especially the local bullies. His botanical research has been conducted like his social lifecold, clinical, and as faraway from others as possible. Through his struggle to survive, Grady learns the importance of valuing different kinds of intelligence. The vitality of the rain forest forces him to realize that research in a vacuum cannot answer vital questions. Traveling deep into the Amazon to join the mysterious Wood Stock project for a summer job, two-time National Science Fair^-winner Grady Jacobs learns that the project head, Phillip Carter, has genetically engineered a tree that grows with prodigious speed, and can therefore serve as a quick replacement for clear-cut rain forest. Unfortunately, the tree also poisons animals and other plants--a fact Carter will go to any length, including murder, to hide. Grady soon finds himself a fugitive, pursued not only by Carter but also by his blowgun-and machete-wielding minions, the Kel-Ha-Nitiba. Trying to stay alive long enough to gather proof of Carter's perfidy, Grady spends roughly equal time swinging through the trees like Tarzan and hunched over his laptop, ferreting out hidden computer files. Readers won't be able to turn the pages fast enough; Thomas stirs generous quantities of both violence and low comedy into a breakneck escapade that, by the end, leaves Carter dead, his plot exposed, and Grady, whose physical exertions have converted him from marshmallow to manly man, fully ready to take on his nemeses in high school. GREEN THUMB!!!

2-time national science fair winner, 13 year-old Grady Jacobs is kind of a nerd in school because he is "smart," but doesn't seem to care too much about it. He is going to spend the summer with a famous botanist, Dr. Phillip Carter, in the Amazon rain forest. They have to try to save the rain forest with some new type of "super tree," before it dies out. His job is mostly to cook, but he discovers something amazing, a system of sounds that lets him to control the trees, kind of like a language. He then discovers that Carters "super trees" aren't helping the Amazon, they're hurting it. Hurting it to the point where they're killing it. When some one finds out about what Grady is doing, and the experiments he is taking, he runs away from Carter's camp, and camps with the Urah-wau Indian tribe. Can he stop Carter from using his "super trees" in the rainforest?

Junior high intellectual turns hero in fun adventure

I'm a big fan of Rob Thomas and this book did not disappoint. I'm also really glad it's directed at the younger reader since junior high kids have probably missed his other titles. (Rats Saw God, Slave Day, Satellite Down) The main character, Grady, is instantly likable while we witness him outwitting his football-star bullies by covertly pelting them with spitballs covered in hair remover. These bullies have beat him up for the last time, however, when he travels to the Amazon rain forest as part of a tree-growing research team. He loses his extra weight & puts on muscle. Not to mention saving the jungle from a mad scientist. It's a fun story that teens will love, with a main character that some may identify with. Keep 'em coming, Rob!!

Saving the rainforest

Grady is a very smart kid and because of it he is asked to spend a couple of weeks with a famous botanist. They are planing to save the forest with special trees. Grady discovers away to speak with the trees with different sounds. He finds out that the trees aren't helping the environment, they're killing it. When people figure out what grady is doing, he runs away. He camps with some indians. Grady teams up with the indians to try to save the rainforest. Can they do it, or will they fail?

This is a real life adventure, written by a young man who is at the very beginning of his quest for freedom. It's a story of questions more than answers and many questions are newly formed and not fully developed.
It's a human story, so expect mistakes.

My mid-life crisis came early; I was only 23 when I began pondering the purpose of my life. Desperately unhappy with where I was, and the future that I could see for myself, I made a crazy decision to sacrifice everything and follow my heart.

It took three years for my heart to speak, but when it did, the call was clear. I dropped out of university, said goodbye to friends and family, stuffed my life into a 25-litre backpack, and set off into the unknown.

What followed was a five year African adventure that carried me to places, and through experiences, that I could never have imagined in my wildest dreams.

About the Author
Philen Naidu is a spiritual adventure novelist, freelance reporter and humanitarian.
He has lived a life away from convention, exploring society andcultures around the world - from bustling 1st world cities tocomparatively dormant 3rd world villages - constantly asking thequestion:

'How do we live in harmony - within ourselves, with Nature andwith each other - in a rapidly developing world that is becoming oneglobal village without borders?'

Born in South Africa, of Indian ancestry, he is currently in Nepal.

The moving "My Life My Africa"

"My Life My Africa" is a touching book of a man's soul searching journey. Philen Naidu shares his story of how his disillusionment with life lead him to give up everything he knew in his fist world existence and follow an instinct to travel into rural Africa. He encounters his own conditioning when faced with a culture and way of life so different to the one he'd grown up in and become accustomed to.

By reading this gripping story of one man, I found myself asking questions of my own life experience, and the way of life we are led to believe is the ultimate way to live. I yearn even more now to travel into Africa and experience for myself another philosophy of living that is more communal and focused on what really matters in life, like relationships.

"My Life My Africa" reads like watching a movie with its informal style. I felt like I was having a coffee with Philen as he went into story telling mode, sharing his emotions and self questioning, and reading from his actual journal. The realness of Philen's expression keeps you turning the pages, and wishing you were having that actual coffee to ask about aspects he doesn't go into detail about in the book.

For a refreshing look at how life keeps us questioning our values, I recommend "My Life My Africa" as a fantastic read of a real life story that I am sure will move you in some way, as it has moved me.

Some Adventure, but little else....

I got a free copy from the author with a request to review this book. The synopsis kindled my interest because it is not often I , as an Indian myself, find books of this type from people of Indian origin.

I would summarize the book briefly as follows: Naidu, a South African of Indian descent, at age 23, feels alienated by the lack of direction in his comfortable life in Johannesburg and decides to go to Zambia to 'find himself'. He lives there among the rural poor, wild hippos, rhinos and elephants and eventually ends up in the business of 'smuggling' goods across the border between S.Africa and Zambia. During this period, he is involved in a serious road accident that leaves him unconscious and in a coma. Finally, he regains consciousness and recovers to health 'miraculously'. In the process, he 'discovers' himself.

As I reached two-thirds into the book, it felt no different from the experiences of many backpackers. Still, there is some real adventure in Naidu's travels as he encounters a wild elephant in the forests where he camps, sleeps near a waterhole and wakes up in the morning in the company of wild hippos and so on. Later, he comes to know that there was a pride of seven lions in the area and elephants with their young ones. This is fantastic and real adventure. Unfortunately, I must say that this was the only thing that really stirred me in the book and that I wasn't excited about much else concerning his 'search'.

A bit of reflection made me realize that people coming from different socio-economic backgrounds would view Naidu's 'existential crisis' in substantially different ways. This is probably at the root of my reaction. Having come up from the lower rungs of 1960s India, it looked to me that Naidu's alienation was primarily due to an affluent background where he is responsible only for himself and not for others around him. In such cases, I suppose one has to search harder to find meaning in life. A poor person in India would often be saddled even during his teens with responsibilities towards his own education, supporting his family and earning money to help educate his siblings and so on. Such responsibilities force a 'purpose' in life and leave little room for estrangement from real life or allow the luxury of 'finding oneself'.

One other reason that made me feel lukewarm towards the book was the narrative having an overtone of romanticizing poverty. Many people have random experiences of great kindness and generosity from the poor in the developing world. But kindness is not exclusive only to the poor. I have travelled extensively in the West and have experienced much kindness from the rich Western world as well. Still, having grown up in poorer backgrounds in India, I can say that poverty can also be cruel, unfeeling and terribly detrimental to one's mental and spiritual development. My experience is that poor people everywhere want to live a materially better life and not keep languishing in poverty.

The other point I have an issue with is the author's characterization of what is 'westernized'. It looks to me that he dubs something as 'western' if it is a feature of upper middle-class living. What he often calls 'westernized' with a negative connotation, turns out to be just a feature of upper middle-class life everywhere, both in the Western as well as the developing worlds.

Finally, there is much usage of expletives, which does not add anything of value to the book. On the contrary, it can alienate many readers.

Very highly recommended.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to know the real Africa with its mix of personalities (the simple, the corrupt and the in-between). It was interesting to learn that some the words in the Zambian language were the same ones used in East Africa. The first part of the book took me back to the simpler times when I was surrounded by "Ubuntu" - before I became a "Muzungu" and got sidetracked. I love this book. I am glad that it was very realistic. I am glad the middle section of the African trading did not go on for a long time. The ending went back to the basics. Well done!!!
