I adore L.A.Fiore’s writing�– have enjoyed several books by her now, and so this was an auto request. Its yet another fabulous, gripping read, full of drama, romance and heartbreak and a puzzle that had me wondering who, what and why yet again.
I love the characters of Teagan (Tea) and Kane. Two youngsters who’ve lost their parents and been brought up by an elderly lady and her close staff in the fabulous house Raven’s Peak. We see them right from the start, developing a close friendship that turns to love in their teens. There’s never been anyone else for either, so when Tea goes off to university expecting Kane to join her as planned six months later she’s shocked, heartbroken and devastated when he tells her he’s not coming, he’s fallen in love with someone�else!!
She doesn’t want to carry on, descends into despair and only Simon, the friend she met in the early uni days, keeps her afloat. His parents have trouble accepting he’s Gay and Tea provides him with the closeness of family that he misses. They’ve become their own family. Over the years he’s always there for her and he’s a fantastic character. Everyone should have a friend like Simon. Then Mrs Marks, the lady who took her in, is gravely ill and after 9-10 years ( not quite sure which) she returns to Raven’s Peak. Simon goes with her, fortunately, because her life is turned upside down by what she discovers. Her past, all the things she thought, all the grief and anger she had was misplaced.
�Its a real puzzle to work out. I hated Kane after his betrayal and just couldn’t see how L.A. would get them back together. Authors do that though, take us down one road and then reveal there was another that we missed. Looking back I can see now the hint of what was to come. I think of these links as Story Seeds, little off the cuff, casual remarks or instances that could be ( and often are ) overlooked yet they’re important, and�that turn into major plots over the course of the book. Sometimes�I see them�– missed it completely this time round though. Its not just one wrong turn though, there’s loads, where I believe what I’m told�– like Tea, because it sounds right, feels genuine and then later find out there are other reasons, events, people involved, and I’ve got it all wrong.
Its a fabulous read, one that had me glued from �start to finish, trying really hard not to sneak a look at the ending....though as I love to re read books that doesn't actually spoil it for me. I’m currently re reading another 5 star favourite, and this one will join my keepers file for enjoying in the future. Good stories bear re reading, reveal things I missed first time round. The only criticism I have�– and its a very minor one�– is Mr Sleazy’s role. After all that build up I expected it to be more of a drama, but it seemed to fizzle into an ending that felt a bit of a let down to me. Its a minor point though, and doesn’t take away from the fabulousness of the story.
Stars: Five, fabulous read, brilliant book, great characters and a story that had me ion the edge of tears at times.

An emotional journey that will take love to another level!!

It is often said that eyes are the windows to the soul and in L.A. Fiore's A Glimpse of the Dream, she takes her readers on an emotional, heartbreaking, and touching journey of loss, friendship, love, second chances, forgiveness, and new beginnings. With a whirlwind of raw emotion, Ms. Fiore was able to interweave the journey of Teagan and Kane from childhood to adults. Their journey was a slow building process that blossomed from childhood friends to soul-mates to lovers. In a true heart wrenching fashion, Ms. Fiore gives readers a realistic portrayal of growth. Though Teagan and Kane knew from the depths of their soul that they were indeed soul-mates, they learned that true love is about sometimes letting someone go. And the beauty of this book, was that Ms. Fiore allowed her readers to FEEL the hurt, the anger, resentment, hope and love when Teagan and Kane were reunited after several years apart. So if you want a book that reminds us all that regardless of time and circumstance, true destined love conquers all.

The synopsis pulled me into A Glimpse of a Dream. Any book that takes place in a Gothic Manor goes to the top of my list. It just screams mystery, suspense, and angst. Right from the beginning, I fell in love with not only the setting, but the characters, as well. Each character was flawed and held a secret in some form which held my interest and kept me guessing throughout.

Teagan and Kane’s story is beautifully tragic. The haunting backdrop of Raven’s Peak makes it even more so. In love for years, they go on a journey of love, sadness and redemption that will move you to tears.

This is a perfect summer read for anyone. It will keep you enthralled from the first page until the very end. L.A. Fiore has a new fan in me!

What a great Arduino resource!

John Boxall's new book, Arduino Workshop: A Hands-On Introduction with 65 Projects (No Starch Press) is a comprehensive book that is well suited to both the neophyte and to the experienced electronic project hobbyist. I've read several books on the Arduino platform and have reviewed a few, but Mr. Boxall's book has raised the bar several notches. I reviewed the paperback version (a whopping 392 pages!) and found it to extremely well written: the prose is clear without being simplistic and each chapter is well laid out. Boxall explains the genesis of the Arduino board and guides the reader through obtaining and installing the Arduino IDE software for the Windows, Linux and Mac OS X operating systems. Each chapter begins with an introduction to explain the goal of the chapter and ends with a "Looking ahead" paragraph that adds further insight and prepares the reader for the next chapter.

The book's 65 projects range from lighting LEDs, a kind of Arduino "Hello world" (though a "Hello world" project occurs in the chapter discussing driving LCDs), to projects incorporating cell phone technologies like SMS text messages, projects about GPS and even several dealing with the construction of a tank-like robot, my personal favorite. Many of the projects start with a simple version then build progressively more sophisticated versions by adding more components or features with the goal of teaching perhaps a specific technology, or as an exercise to encourage the reader to consider the Arduino's flexibility. For example, the tank robot project starts by using micro-switches to assist with "collision avoidance." Then the reader is guided through modifying the robot to use infrared components to avoid objects, and then to using ultrasonic distance calculation components! Each project contains the program source code to be entered into the Arduino IDE (programs are called "sketches" in Arduino parlance), and a complete parts list with suggested suppliers and their web addresses.

The book also contains a section on comparing the various Arduino boards available in the Arduino ecosystem. Since the Arduino design has been "open sourced" by its creators, Boxall explains some of the differences between "real" Arduino boards to Arduino equivalents produced by other manufacturers, including one design kit where you can build your own Arduino from scratch.

As other reviewers have pointed out, one bonus feature makes this book even more valuable, though. The way in which Boxall explains each project gives the reader a basic course in electronics: he explains how each electronic component functions, how electricity works in the context of these projects and even points the reader to resources for learning how to solder, though one could probably do most of the projects using only solderless "breadboards."

John Boxall and No Starch Press have given us a really great book. Like many smaller (and still excellent) books on the Arduino, Boxall's book has plenty of URLs to point the user to places on the web where they can find more information. What's nice about this book is that it is so well documented and thorough that one could easily envision hunkering down somewhere with this it, some components and a soldering iron and working through chapter upon chapter, without ever even needing to open a web browser. I could imagine this being a great vacation book to take a long with said components and soldering iron, to somewhere with electricity, but without cell coverage or internet access (I know a few such places that still exist in New England), whiling away the hours creating projects, learning about the Arduino and having a lot fun.

Should be on every Arduino-ists bookshelf!

I'll get my gripe out of the way first then I can go on to be positive. I really think Arduino Workshop is under selling itself. It's not just a workshop manual but a tutorial on electronics, programming and Arduino, and a very good one at that. With that out of the way I think you can guess I really rate this book. Being of the somewhat nerdy persuasion I have of course heard of Arduino but given that I tend to play more in the in software arena I only really knew it as a name and general concept rather than as a tool. This book tells you pretty much everything you could want to know about how to pick up and use Arduino. It's written largely as a set of exemplar projects backed up with the appropriate background information about the required components and programs. I very much doubt anyone will go through the book and build all the projects, but then again I don't really think that's what's expected. It's much more likely that most people will thoroughly read the first six chapters which have the basics of the Arduino, circuits and the Arduino programming language (which, for previous programmers out there, looks a lot like C/C++) and then treat the rest of the book as a bit of a pick and mix. There are chapters on touch screens, liquid crystal display, GPS, internet communication and many others so you can select the elements that your project requires, learn how to use them and put them together. And you even have the joy of knowing that when you reach the end of the book you can go onto the author's web site and pick up there where Arduino Workshop left off. Over all this is an excellent resource and one that should be on the shopping list of everyone interested in creating their own Arduino toys and tools.

Arduino From Ground Zero to Advanced Physical Computing

The popularity of the inexpensive, powerful and easy to use Open Source physical computing platform called "Arduino" has yielded a plethora of good introductory books. So why is this the one to own if you own no other? Firstly, the author has been preparing excellent free online tutorials on his website "TRONIXSTUFF" for several years and has over 50 excellent web-based lessons in Arduino applications and interfacing. He, John Boxall is a master of teaching beginners to make things happen with this compact $30.00 computer. He has indeed mastered hands-on pedagogy for Makers and this book offers an excellent resource beyond the website. Secondly, beginning with simple tutorials and projects that can be successfully completed by any beginning Maker, John leads the reader to advanced skills including I2C and SPI serial interfaces, attaching a real-time clock module, interfacing GPS components and integrating these Arduino GPS results with Google Maps, and charting the values of a temperature sensor on a LCD display. Mr. Boxall has introduced a simplified schematic representation of Arduino interfaces that can be understood by anyone.

This is truly a book for a beginner to physical computing and advanced Arduino users seeking additional interfacing and programming skills.

This book is a must have. It's an accessible no nonsense guide to growing and developing mental/psychologically. Hands down the most useful thing in this book is the breakdown of the different dysfunctions and relationship dynamics. It is clear, concise, and full of good examples. That "co-dependent" thing people are always talking about, yeah this book breaks it down and shows you ways out of it. [EDITED AND DOWNGRADED] Buy if you already like the game

Shadowrun 3rd edition was the last RPG I played before taking a break from the hobby for about a decade. I've now bought the SR5 core book and played a couple of sessions. My initial, cursory impressions:

As always, the Shadowrun setting is one of my favorites: a combination of cyberpunk and magic. If you're looking for Neuromancer meets Necromancer, Shadowrun is the standard. And as always, the wide variety of gear, weapons, and avenues for character improvement - cyberware, bioware, spells, foci, super-cool guns, etc. - is great. (Of course, this is also the reason SR has always appealed to powergamers, but that's another story.)

In physical terms, the core book is well put together: massive, with good artwork, slick glossy pages, fold-out art, and story insertions to provide local color. It tends to "sprawl" here and there, with information on a single topic appearing in several different areas. This is a classic element of SR sourcebook organization, so it's no surprise that it's still around, if a little toned down. However, there are too many errors. Not errata, rules that need to be changed; errors, things that should have been caught in proofreading. (Like a citation for the cost of fake IDs directing the reader to page 367 when it should be page 443.) As a former copy editor, I know that manuals are much harder to proofread than, say, novels or articles; but for that reason, good proofing is much more important, because there's less context to guide the reader. (And citation proofing is especially important in as discursive a rulebook as this.)

Shadowrun's game mechanics have always been famously (or notoriously) complex. That's both more and less true in SR5. On the positive side, the rules for deckers/Matrix play have been dramatically simplified and made more playable since SR3 (as far as I can tell - I couldn't even read the SR3 Matrix rules without falling asleep). Now deckers can "brick" weapons and be much more of an on-site presence than they used to be. My GM didn't even have to run a decker as an NPC - one of the players chose to be a decker. (Old SR hands know how rare that used to be.) On the negative side, combat rules involve a lot of unnecessary rolls that could be unified into a single test, simplifying game play and speeding up the resolution of big combat scenes.

Also, the "Edge" attribute, meant to represent a character's luck, "hot hand," "on the ball" quality, is too powerful. Using the "blitz" option for Edge during combat, our decker got to react even before our weapons specialist, who has level-2 synaptic boosters. (For those new to SR, this would be like the Matthew Broderick kid from WarGames getting into a shootout with Wild Bill Hickok, shooting first, and winning.) If you're playing a campaign where there's one or two combats a session, that drastically weakens the biggest advantage of any 'wared combat type.

Another, more minor, quibble is with Ares weapons. In SR3, guns manufactured by Ares Macrotechnology were sort of the white bread of weapons: widely accessible, widely used, but neither the best nor the worst bang you could get for your buck. You knew that you wouldn't make a terrible choice if you bough an Ares Predator Heavy Pistol (for instance) but there were more interesting, dangerous, and/or limited options out there. Ares was the default. In the current rules, Ares isn't the default - it's simply the best option. The Predator is better than its nearest rival, the Browning Ultra-Power; the Ares Alpha assault rifle is better than any other except the Yamaha Raiden, which isn't available to new players (and it has a grenade launcher the Raiden doesn't); Ares even makes the best light and machine pistols. Maybe future supplements will restore the gun balance.

It would also have been nice if the (admittedly good) concept art pullouts had included maps of the Seattle metroplex and North America, to orient new players.

The final, most subtle, and most difficult issue is the Shadowrun universe. Back in SR3 days, there were half a dozen interesting, hinted-at conspiracies: What was going on in Tir na nOg (formerly Ireland)? What's the deal with dragons and elves? This dragon has become president! Now he's assassinated! What happens next? But you can't run a game universe for more than a decade and still keep it in roughly the same place. All of these mysteries had world-spanning scope and consequence - but if they were to be fully played out, it would mean massive, unpredictable changes in adventure settings and scenarios. The (completely understandable) result has been a game world with lots and lots of huge, important events in its timeline...but that has somehow stayed essentially unchanged (with the exception of ghouls and wireless technology).

So...there it is. Shadowrun is worth playing, and the SR5 core book will become even more useful as the errata and sourcebooks on things like adept powers and new weapons emerge. For people happy with an earlier edition of SR, I'd say wait a little bit until SR5 is more fully supported; for those thinking of playing for the first time, I'd say it's a good game, a lot of fun, but be sure your group can commit to the game mechanics of this complex system.

ETA: I've now had some time to review and use the current edition of the rulebook, and I have to remove *at least* one star from my review. Here's why:

1. The organization of the manual is actually more scattered and user-unfriendly than I thought at first. It's not uncommon to have to jump to three different locations in the manual to find all the information you need on a particular subject. On the same lines, the citations and the index have more mistakes than I thought at first. Add this to the difficulty of the rule system, and you can have new players hold up the action for ten or fifteen minutes, looking for the info they need. (My GM, who has been playing Shadowrun since at least the Second Edition, believes that the quality has diminished since the FASA team left active development of SR.)

2. Although the manual is physically impressive - as I mentioned above - it's also very heavy, making it hard to use easily and carry to and from games. It's also unacceptably fragile: I actually saw a couple of pages come loose from the binding in my GM's hand. This is really shoddy for a newly printed book.

With all of this in mind, here's my current, REVISED recommendation:

SR5's setting and character options are still terrific; we just finished a fun session. If you decide to play the game, don't get the expensive, real-world book; buy the e-book (when available), which won't fall apart on you and makes finding the right information much easier. (Search Function, anyone?) Also, if you're going to be old school and use real dice (my personal choice) instead of an electronic dice simulator, get a block of 12mm (NOT 16mm) dice with rounded edges. You roll a lot of six-sided dice in SR, and this is a necessity. And finally, raise your voices - for a better organized, better produced, better proofread manual. Let Catalyst know that shoddy is NOT acceptable.

SECOND ETA:

I've also found that the prose can be confusing, leading to legalistic debates - for instance, using game terms without defining them.
And, for those folks reading reviews, I have a suggestion: Ignore those reviews written within a week of receiving the book. Only trust the reviews that were written after a few weeks or months of game play. Why? Because initially, the book looks very good; it takes a few weeks for the flaws - poor binding, poor organization, poor prose - to become obvious.

THE LAST ETA [I HOPE!]:

I'm adding this final edit to describe something that happened during game play yesterday; I'm doing it because something comparable will probably happen to you if you play Fifth Edition.

Midway through the game, I discovered that I would have to use something called a "physical limit" during some activities that didn't involve gun combat (my character's strong suit). Physical limits are the maximum number of hits your character can roll for some physical tasks. So these limits are clearly pretty important. Fair enough; I looked up the "Limits" section to find out how to derive my physical limit from my character's physical attributes.

It wasn't there.

So I went where the Limits section told me to go - page 51, the "Attributes" section. It wasn't there, either. So I went to the index to look up every place in the book that uses the word "limits" - no joy.

THIRTY minutes of leafing through the sourcebook later, and in the middle of the game, I finally find out how to derive physical limits. It's in a single table in a subsection of the Character Generation chapter entitled "Final Calculations." I found it through sheer luck. There were only 3 players in the game who knew its location before I did: one is a lawyer; one is the game master; and one is a guy who's read the manual cover to cover at least three times. There was no obvious, easy way to find this very important rule. The same thing happened, during the same game session, with the rules regarding armor and spirits - a very important armor rule was hidden in the "Materialization" section of Critter Powers.

Sorry, guys at Catalyst Games - this isn't acceptable. Better editing. Better proofreading. Better organization. Better production values. Simpler game mechanics. More thought to world improvement. If these issues aren't addressed, I'll vote that we turn back to Third Edition, not forward to Sixth, if our group moves on from SR5.

Great game, organized badly.

So, I want to create an SR5 character. The concept of Inherent Limits is vital to how you choose attributes and skills, but how to calculate Inherent Limits is nowhere to be found in those sections.

So I go to the index, look up "inherent limits", and that sends me to page 47. Page 47 doesn't say how to calculate Inherent Limits, but it sends me to page 51, which also says nothing about how to calculate Inherent Limits. Looking up "limits" sends me to page 66, which also doesn't say how to calculate Inherent Limits, but it sends me to page 46, which also says nothing about how to calculate Inherent Limits.

So where it is? Page 101. Great job, index. A sticky tab goes on page 101 so I can find it again.

My book has a whole lot of sticky tabs in it now, because so much vital info is placed so far away from where it's needed. I think SR5 is the best edition yet, but the rulebook is a struggle to use.

Prohibitive Organization Disguises Brilliant Game as Repulsive

I found a PDF file of this and wanted the hard copy because it was personally easier for me to browse hard copies of books instead of PDFs, so I knew exactly what I was getting into when I bought this.

This game is incredible. The mechanics are sound and "more realistic" than Dungeons and Dragons in some respects. The setting and the lore are great, and incredibly creative and including an amazing cultural dynamic to expand upon. The dice system may be a bit weird, but for players new to the genre it might be less confusing than the multiple polyhedral dice that are required for others.

First off, one of the great things about Shadowrun is that nobody is immortal. Sure, you can rank up your skills over time and become stronger, but there are caps and even at the height of power you can be taken down by the lone rent-a-cop if he's lucky and plays his cards right. It's balanced, unlike Dungeons and Dragons where if you're a level 20 fighter you can just laugh as the level 1 warrior orcs attempt to break through your armor and then they have to chop for five consecutive minutes just to dent your health.

Second, it encourages teamwork on a greater scale than Dungeons and Dragons. You have to be smarter about what you're doing in Shadowrun, otherwise you'll end up with a bullet in your head.

There is so much to do in Shadowrun, and so much to explore, but it is definitely not for everyone for one particular reason: Organization.

When it was suggested by my Dungeons and Dragons Gamemaster that we take a break to play Shadowrun during the Summer, I took one look at the manual and immediately thought "This is going to be a collaborative effort to figure out" and I was right.

The dense manual took at least a week to figure out, and I'm usually able to sift through confusing information relatively quickly. Unless you're willing to spend a week in prep just to figure out how to build a character or play the game, this manual is not for you. The index is only partially helpful, too, as the other reviews point out.

About the Author

Good despite totally misleading title

This book is about the history on the making of James Bond movies, up until Casino Royale. That's all 21 films if you're counting.

Included are lots of on-set photographs, some concept artwork consisting mainly of storyboards. There are also interviews with key talents like Michael G.Wilson, Barbara Broccoli, Ken Adam, John Barry and Martin Campbell.

In essence, this book is about the history of James Bond and how it made it to the big screen. Many production stories are included in the interviews, like how they fix up the set, cast characters and choose music. These stories come in the form of interviewees' quotes. There is no narration in the book.

The book could be thicker given James Bond's long and illustrious history. I just can't help thinking about how much stuff they left out. I guess they may be covered in other James Bond books.

It's a good read overall, but mainly for James Bond fans.

The best Bond book on the market by a master writer!!!

This book is amazing! It has SO much 007 info, never before seen photos, illuminating text, zillions of interviews with some of the most influential directors of our time, including Spielberg. Bouzereau offers an A-Z listing of everything you always wanted to know about the art of James Bond films. Beyond merely stating the facts, he also punctuates the listings with his own elucidating commentary on characters, actors, set designers, costume designers, with bits of trivia, etc. The text is further buttressed with hundreds of rare, never before seen color and black-and-white stills. In sum, this is a rich resource for all Bond fans who will be both shaken and stirred by the multitude of factoids and photos. HIGHLY Recommended!!! Buy this book, you'll love it!!!!

Start your own band!

I bought the first set of books in this series, Songbook 1, Level 1, for Guitar, Piano, Drums & Bass about two years ago so my boys (guitar, piano) and I (bass) would have something to play together. Two years later we have a 10 piece band made up of mostly youth (aged 12-18) that uses several songs from each of the books to make up a 90 minute set list. The books have worked perfectly to provide increasingly challenging material for the band to play as the youth have grown in ability. Sure, the parts in the lower level books are simplified and the arrangements not true to the original artists, but they sound pretty good when played, and the important thing is that they have real, entire, audience recognizable songs to play from the outset. Each book provides slightly more difficult material and introduces the youth to artists they will recognize for the rest of their lives. The Beatles, Ray Davies, Clapton, Santana, Morrison, Elvis, Muddy Waters, The Stones & many more. Our goal initially was just to play for ourselves and maybe on campouts, but by the time we got into the second book and found a drummer we had other kids coming to us wanting to join the band and perform for real audiences. Now we play for groups from 50-500 (for free, our performances are a service to the community, and we have no illusions of going any further than this); so, we now have our own little Glee-like band. If you are looking for a way to get a something like this going I have found no other series or set of books that does as good a job. The Fast Track books got us from beginners to a level of ability that we can now play more current & popular tunes from bands like Kings of Leon & Paramore in addition to those from the Fast Track series. Some of our older members are heading off to college now and being replaced by younger performers. The Fast Track books are where we start them. Its a rush to be in the car with the band when one of the tunes they know comes on the radio. The whole car will start rocking out to Evil Ways, Back In The USSR, or Surfin' USA. Well worth the $10-$15 for the book and CD for each part. You would spend way more than that buying separate songs for each instrument from a sheet music supplier and still have no CD to play along with. So, grab a couple of friends to play the different instruments, shell out the $50 to buy the first book for each part, and start jamming! Who knows, maybe we'll see you out there!

Good for learning some simple songs

I've been learning guitar for less than one year, and I travel a lot so small song books are a must for me with my Traveler Speedster guitar.

The songs aren't perfectly accurate, but they're a good start, and anyone listening will know what you're playing, with only the purists noticing the differences from the original recordings.

There's nothing worse than learning chords and scales without knowing how to use them in songs, so I use these books to apply the basic chords and scales to songs that I know. They're better than most tabs I've found on the internet, and I find standard notation easier to follow than tabs anyway. I find it much easier to stay in time with standard notation.

Learning these songs will make the early learning process more fun than just practicing seemingly pointless chord progressions and scales.

I bought another book first (I forget the title), and the first thing the author said was that it's important to have a foundation before tackling his book. He recommended the Hal Leonard Guitar 1 series as a basis, and I'm glad he did.
