About the Authors...
Andrew F. Peterson is associate professor at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. His research interests center on the development of both integral and differential equation based numerical methods for electromagnetic applications.
Scott L. Ray is a research scientist at Dow AgroSciences, where he also serves as technical leader for the Applied Statistics Group. He previously contributed to time-domain computational electromagnetics at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and was involved in the development of TSAR, a general-purpose FDTD modeling system.
Raj Mittra is professor in the Electrical Engineering Department and a senior research scientist at the Applied Research Laboratory of Pennsylvania State University. He has also published over 450 journal papers and 25 books or book chapters on various topics related to electromagnetics, antennas, microwaves, and electronic packaging.

A great book for those with an existing background in EM

I used this book during my MSEE research and found it to be invaluable. While I also had the benefit of the principal author being my Advisor, this book easily stands by itself. This book describes several different methods and concepts in the computational analysis of EM problems, including issues related to computer optimization. It's somewhat dense in that the authors assume you already have a thorough knowledge of EM, so I wouldn't recommend it for beginners. If you work in the field, however, this book is a must-have.

Cookbook not a textbook

Very poorly written book about computational electromagnetic theory. Explanations are not so good, there are a lot of formulas in which you have to deduce what some symbol means, they didn't talk a lot about accuracy and error which are two very important things in numerical analysis. Book serves as a cookbook. Use this and you will get that. This is not a book from which you can learn something.

Infomercial. Disapointed. Save your money.

This book disappointed me in many ways.

I will list a few.

I have been reading the author's market comments for years and he makes sense most of the time. He had the potential to really share something useful. He did not.

The book:

The books starts with a bit of his personal history, then with some common investment wisdom you can find for free anywhere, stuff like " you don't have to be always invested, some of the best traders are in the market no more than 20% or 30% of the year."
Nothing wrong with those reminders so far, other than there is nothing new there.

Where I started to have a serious whiff of infomercial was when the author was chanting the virtues of cycles,etc. then after one of the chapters, I realized that pretty much none of what he had talked about so far relied on commonly found indicators... That's when I felt the pinch of a leg trap and I knew what was coming ahead: the only system who had all that good stuff was :

1- Bill O'Neil's IBD system
2- the author's system
3- other Financial Gurus system.

If you answered 2, you are one heck of a smart wizard. Congrats!
That's it, the second half of the book is basically funneling the readers towards his proprietary system Algo Trades.

I read the second part halfheartedly, expecting pretty much all the infos to be related to some services the author had to sell. I was not disappointed in that regard.

So here are my recommendations:

1- If you are planning to use Algo Trades or his other services, skip the book and go to his website. The FAQ and videos are pretty good, it covers most of what the book covers.

2- Want to learn to trade on your own? Try "How to Make Money in Stocks : Getting Started" from Galgani so you can learn to use O'Neil's service, if you don't want to use O'Neil's paid services, you will still get some decent infos in that book and it will be a good intro for the ticker "How to Make Money in Stocks" from O'Neil himself.

If you want a very solid book for beginners to pros, try the Superstocks book by Jesse Stine. It contains some of the O'Neils principles... but just a few. The authors has his own recipe and he is not afraid to share it.

On the positive side...

I need to disclose that despite the fact that I got nothing out of the book, I still respect the author. I think he is a hard-working, honest guy with a strong entrepreneurial side. Though I am not subscribing to any of his services at this point, I did a long time ago and I might in the future.

My point is that I have no real concerns with his integrity, it is just that I hate buying infomercial books. I know this guy has lots of tricks and in exchange of my dough... I thought he would share way more. I was just out of Jesse Stine's book which is pretty much packed with big charts and tricks, therefore my expectations where high.

AlgoTrades system doesn't work

I'm reluctantly writing a negative review about this book because I really wanted to like the AlgoTrades system that Chris basically advertises in his book. I read the book, signed up for his AlgoTrades newsletter service and quickly realized that almost everything he highlights in the book is common sense stuff and the "hands-free" automated trading system he develop loses more money than it makes. You will lose money using his system and you will learn nothing new from the content of this book.

I've studied technical analysis for years, so Chris's book was a reminder to have a plan, know myself, and stay
focused. The stock market is a complex arena, and Chris keeps trading simple. The book is easy to read, and I
recommend it for beginners, and for those more experienced traders, like myself.

Cyber Security Basics is a great book for those looking to learn the information security fundamentals. Don starts off be sharing the "Defenders dilemma" and moves through the various defensive techniques that make enterprises resilient from cyber attacks. I really like how Don distilled complex cyber security topics and explained them with clarity and simplicity. Don defines traditional and modern terms in an easy to read format and also nicely categorizes the commonly used security acronyms. I would recommend this book for early practitioners, those looking to expand their knowledge of the security space and those looking to build security into their program.

Good For Romance Fans

I'm not totally sure how to review this book. It was a pretty quick read, with a good amount of action and lots of romance. It probably just wasn't the book I was in the mood for, or expected it to be.

The main problem of this book, in my opinion, is its main focus on relationships. I'm the type of person who wants lots of action and excitement in books, not a teenager wondering what she should do with her boyfriend, especially in a book centered around missions and "Talents". Don't get me wrong - I'm a huuuuge fan of romance - in fact, most of the time it is my guilty pleasure! (I am a hormonal teenager after all.) There were lots of sweet moments, but again, it just wasn't what I was looking for.

As for characters, I found that they were just "okay". Each character had distinct strengths and weaknesses, although I found that most of the characters fell kind of flat. And for those of you who are sick of love triangles, this book is not for you.

The up side is that there was a good amount of action and magical-power-ness (erm. Not a word, but still) I loved learning about "Cryptos" and various Talents that TOXIC trained, as well as the Hunters and various missions they had to carry out. The missions Talia, Henry, and Erik had to carry out were also filled with suspense and action, as well as, ahem, magical-power-ness. The amount of politics was also actually a plus for me - it includes some aspects of today that are certainly realistic enough to continue on towards the future. My only complaint concerning this is probably also concerning my personal tastes -

I found that the mystery and mysterious "bad things" involving TOXIC to be very straightforward and simple to figure out. Personally, I found that the fact that Talia was unable to figure this out even after the second book (I took a look at Book 3 - whoops...) a little unrealistic and stupid on Talia's part. But again, this may just be because of my personal tastes.

Overall, I would recommend this book to people who are looking for more of a romance than an action read, or something along the lines of a romance-focused book, with bits of action (well, basically a paranormal romance). Otherwise, if you're looking for more Talent action or an espionage type novel, I suggest you pass on Talented.

Here's a bit of the synopsis...
"Talia Lyons is Talented. Born after a nuclear spill, she is part of a new generation that possesses special abilities; Talia can read the minds of others and manipulate their thoughts. Whether Morphers, Light Manipulators or Telekinetics, the Talented are taught to control their abilities under the protective eye of the government- to use their Talents for good. But all Talia wants is revenge."

I don't really read dystopian books, but I find myself enjoying them more & more when I read them, & this one is no exception.

The book is staged in a world much like ours, but where politics are much different (and not explained all that much), & some children grow up with a wealth of different "talents". This book strangely reminds me of a short story I wrote as a kid, where all the kids have magical abilities, including the one Talia Lyons (the main character in Talented) has, the ability to not only read people's thoughts, but manipulate them as well.

The only thing I wasn't crazy about, was there are quite a few storylines in the book that are rather predictable, at least to me, but it didn't make the book any more enjoyable or fun to read. It is a young adult book, after all. I can't wait to read the next book.

There are some minor typos, words missing or written in the wrong order, but nothing major. I usually won't read books if they aren't edited well, but this one only has a few & they don't occur (or at least I didn't see any) until the latter half of the book.

Deceptive premise and trite love triangle

I read Talented as part of a GoodReads group. It's marketed as a science fiction intrigue but the main focus is a love triangle. My review will be split into five categories: plot, characters, world building, polish, and overall. Be warned that there may be spoilers but I will do my best to avoid them.

1. Plot

The start is good: an attack on Elite Headquarters that turns out to be a mere hazing to the pledge hunters carried out by the full fledged hunters. Its dramatic and exciting and it pulled me in. The next scene is a tender moment for Natalia (the protagonist) and Donavon (her boyfriend). This is also good because it transitions nicely from the reveal and allows for teasing from her teammates, setting up a sibling-like dynamic with them.

The first seven chapters are great. There's swift character develop, plenty of non-intrusive world building, some romance between Natalia and Donavon, and comedy relief from Erik. The next seven chapters drag. There is no more world building, Natalia's relationship with Donavon takes up more screen time, and a lot of nothing goes on before the first mission begins.

The first mission itself wasn't bad. A new team with a pledge team member isn't going to get the most exciting mission. This is realistic and reasonable; a good choice. Erik's actions at the end are surprising and provide a Chekhov's gun for later use.

It's after the first mission that I have issues with this book. The plot dissolves into relationship drama and anything involving The Coalition ( the bad guys) slips into the background. Their next missions aren't developed in the slightest. 'went off without a hitch' is their entirety. It is at this point that the reader will notice the lack of a driving conflict.

The Coalition is scantly developed: anti-talented group that took over seven states in the backstory. There's nothing else about them. The Agency, for its world building, is sparse about its activities. Hunters 'hunt' information and people but what kind of information is ambiguous and what kind of people is implied to be protestors. Though this DOES serve a purpose in the plot it doesn't help the lack of direction in this area which contributes to the over exposure of the relationship drama. The following chapters see this trend continue; hunter missions becomes subordinated to set up more relationship conflict. I feel Miss. Davis was bored by the stable Natalia/Donavon and exploited it for conflict.

Chapter twenty four is a breath of fresh air. It has a detailed mission with suspense and hints at a dark side of The Agency. However, as soon as the mission is over, the relationship conflict resumes dominance. It's like the start except Natalia is cuddling with someone besides Donavon.

The final arc I really like.

For starters the stakes are high: it's a mission that determines whether or Natalia can graduate from the hunter academy and become a full fledged hunter. Since she is a telepaths and telepaths don't normally become hunters her reputation and that of her team captain and her adoptive father/boss are riding on her performing well.

There's plenty of detail in her actions and what she has to do to succeed. She makes mistakes but is able to improvise. She feels guilt over using mind manipulation. There's suspense and a clash with the Big Bad of the Coalition, Mr. Crane. It has the excitement of a climax but it doesn't resolve anything. I would have liked to see Natalia go back to Elite Headquarters for her graduation because that was how the book started; her starting her pledge year.

2. Characters

Like the plot, the characters start off great. Natalia is a Nice Girl who takes her missions seriously but not obsessively and makes time for non-hunter related things like dates with Donavon. Eric is established as a funny charmer who girls swoon over and Henri as their Reasonable Authority Figure captain. Later, Penny is brought in as a quirky sociable friend for Natalia and works well as her foil. Like the plot, it sours.

Natalia comes off as schizophrenic because in one scene she's 100 percent focused on being a hunter and avenging her parents and then in the next she's pining after Erik or feeling guilty about pinning after Erik because her boyfriend is Donavon.

Erik shifts from being a funny charmer to a jealous angst guy that clashes with Donavon. At the start he goes to the city every other night for a one night stand and then after the first mission he's serious about Natalia and no mention of him looking for chicks is ever made again.

Henri is pushed to the sidelines because he doesn't have relationship trouble. Penny's purpose (until the climax) is reduced to teasing/pushing Natalia toward Erik. Donavon goes from a Nice Guy to a jerkass to borderline evil.

From chapter seventeen to twenty four the sole focus is a love triangle of Erik/Natalia/Donavon and triggered by Erik bandaging the wounds Natalia received on the first mission. She's lived with him for an extended period of time and yet suddenly she's distracted by his eyes and chest, etc. I wouldn't mind if the conflict weren't so generic. Donavon is her childhood friend that she feels safe with and Erik is a ladykiller that excites her with good looks. It's 'comfortable vs thrilling'.

3. World Building

This part is my favorite. Miss. Davis obviously put a lot of thought in this world and how it would work. Entire chapters early on are dedicated to explaining the source of Talents or how The Agency works or the origin of The Coalition. Best of all, the exposition is slotted into its own, brief, chapters; no 'as you know' between Natalia and someone else.

My personal favorite is the Mandatory Testing Act, more broadly known in fiction as a 'Superhuman Registration Act'. Unlike many examples this one has been in effect for one hundred years and become a fundamental part of society.

However, there is one problem. The origin of talents is explained by nuclear waste leaking into oceans and soil and thereby mutating it, yet scientists in the same chapter claim the can't find a mutation that could cause talents. Unless the true origin of talents or finding the specific mutation is a plot point then there is a contradiction in her premise.

4. Polish

The book looks unpolished. Words are missing semi-frequently. Commas are overused. Sentence structure is bland and could use trimming.

5. Overall

After completing the book I feel Miss Davis wanted to write a romance but wanted to rope in a Periphery Demographic by including super powers and CIA-like missions. There's nothing wrong with that but you have to deliver. About 80 percent of the story is Natalia's relationship problems. Only three missions receive any development and the first two are completed in pages. Romance might like it but everyone else should stay far away.

Practical, Research Based, Concise

I was waiting for a long time for a book that lists, in a concise, comprehensive and intelligent manner, the main values and variables that differentiate cultures and nations. The unique thing about Expand Your Borders is that it is written in a language understandable by absolutely everyone. The Cultural Intelligence (CQ) information is as valuable for a professional, as well as for those who want to understand better their foreign neighbors or co-workers, or the people of the country they are about to visit.

"Sophisticated stereotypes" is the key phrase of the book: grouping all cultures in 10 Clusters is intended to compare different cultures, and not to perfectly understand one culture. Also, the values described by Dr. Livermore are not intended to profile each individual belonging to a specific culture. There are multiple sources of knowledge for understanding a single culture, and even then, that does not mean that each individual belonging to that culture will fit a description perfectly.
However, the variables presented in Expand Your Borders give a comprehensive, in depth understanding of a certain culture's human nature. There is no better way to understand a culture than looking at its relationship to power and authority, at the dominant social relationships mentality, at its attitude toward the uncertainty, at peoples' style of communication and their need for immediate or delayed gratification.

Expand your Borders is written by an absolute expert in the field of globalization, multicultural environments and Intercultural management. David Livermore is one of the founders of the concept of Cultural Intelligence (CQ), which is based on over a decade of academic research. David is The CQ scale is the only academically valid assessment that helps describe and enhance one's level of Cultural Intelligence (CQ).

An introduction, not a compendium

Livermore writes a good read that highlights some basic differences while keeping things simple by using cultural clusters rather than individual cultures. "Ethnicity and Family Therapy" this isn't. It will serve you best if you're interested in the nearer clusters rather than the farther ones (with respect to American culture.) This is because there is one cluster for anglo, four clusters for Europe, one each for Africa, Latin America, and Arab, and two for Asia. Not exactly proportional to population sizes, to say the least. In fairness, Livermore did not make up the clusters, he draws them from some other studies. I'm following the winter olympics in Sochi right now, and there are actually no clusters for all of the Russian and former Soviet republics. Also, China gets lumped with Thailand, Japan, and all of east Asia while India is lumped with Pakistan and Bengladesh. Aussies and Kiwis, I guess you're Anglo.

That said, this is an accessible way of beginning to understand some of the ways cultures diverge, and that's all Livermore promises--as the back cover says, "a macro comparison of the most significant cultural similarities and differences (with a western bias.) My parentheses added there.

Pick this book up for a quick read, an initial introduction to some of the ways cultures differ from the US, whether they're near or far, but not too much more. It would be a good choice for an undergraduate course in cultural diversity or an orientation for people in business venturing out of their own culture without much experience. It won't overwhelm you, but it will start to orient you as you...expand your borders!

A great resouces for cross-cultural interactions

David Livermore continues to provide great resources for people who interact cross-culturally whether on a once in a lifetime trip or on a daily basis in their neighborhood or workplace. Expand Your Borders is the latest resource from Livermore.

Livermore has given us a starting point from which you can observe the ten different clusters of people around the world. I really felt as if I was traveling around the world while reading the book. It was an experience!

Quoting from the book, here is what you can expect:

For each cluster, we’re going to look at:
• An icon or cultural artifact that symbolizes the cluster in some way
• Examples of countries included in the cluster
• An overview of the history and background of the cluster
• The cultural value dimensions that are most relevant to understanding the cluster
• Key differences with in the cluster
• A few do’s and taboos to consider when interacting with individuals from the cluster

I must say, David Livermore delivers on the expectations.

Here is the impact that Expand Your Borders had on me
1. I live in a cluster not my own. Reading about my adopted culture helped me to explain some of my daily frustrations.
2. I have friends from different clusters that often annoy me with their “habits.” After reading Expand Your Borders, I have come to understand some of the “habits” as cultural differences. Communication with those friends has improved greatly!
3. I finished the book with a great desire to get to know people from all ten clusters!

This book is a must have for anybody who connects with people from different backgrounds. It could save you from frustration, conflict, and embarrassment. In a business context, it can give you that slight edge to win a contract or make the sale. I highly recommend it!
