Not Great but Not Bad, Maybe Good for a Rookie to the Business World

This wasn't a great book and it wasn't a bad book. It was readable to the sense that it didn't put me to sleep but it also wasn't exciting to the point that I didn't want to put it down. It was interesting but not a book where you will take away a lot of new ideas if you have been around for a long time in the business world.

The book is broken up into a bunch of mini-chapters what the author calls Lessons and Quickies. Each lesson gives a little bit of advice or wisdom. The lesson can be one page, one line on a page or a few pages. I think that maybe someone starting out in sales might find some of the earlier chapters useful. In these early chapters there is focus on the customer and how to know your customer. After the sales chapters the book kind of goes off into a bunch of different topics.

Again, its an ok read. Recommended for a beginner in business not recommended for an experienced executive.

I'm Swimming with the Sharks and Loving It

As an avid business book reader, I've heard nothing but great things about this book. Greats reviews, comments, and praise....hmm, I have to admit that I was a little skeptical.

So I decided to pick up this book for a plane ride from Chicago to Puerto Rico which is about a five hour ride. Well, that was one of the fastest plane rides I have ever had. I couldn't put the book down.

Be prepared to take a lot of notes, as the style used to write this book is very fast and free flowing. It's loaded with golden nuggets, so take your time going through it. It might even be a good idea to read it more than once.

The one negative that I will say about the book is that Mr Mackay is a highly connected man as he mingles with athletes, celebrities, etc. Connections that the average person may not see on a daily basis. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but it may turn people off, thinking it doesn't apply to their specific situation. But if you dig deep, you find ways to apply his principles to any situation you may be in....just a thought.

Some "aha" moments

I read this book from the standpoint of someone who is trying to build up the loan and account portfolio at a branch (which I manage) of one of the nation's top 5 banks.
That being the perspective of your reviewer, I found a lot of information in Mr. Mackay's book to be effective in helping me build my business.

One example: until recently, I emotionally beat myself down each time I didn't land a new customer when going on business calls. In "Swim with the Sharks" Mackay says it's just fine to position yourself as "Number 2" in the prospects mind. That is, if you don't get the new account when you first visit the prospect don't worry about it. Use targeted persistence and over time, when that prospect's current service provider stumbles, you will be "number 2" in line and ready to serve their needs.
Mackay then gives you a very detailed and specific framework to use so that you A) know how to persist and be positioned to move from #2 to #1 and B) don't tumble from the #1 spot once you get there.

For more seasoned sales people this may be common knowledge. For most others, like me, the reasoning is so logical (yet under practiced) that it seems like it must be common knowledge.

Since reading this book in late March, 2010 I have wrenched 2 new business customers from competing banks and I attribute these successes to not only the nuts-and-bolts in "Swim with the Sharks" but also to the confidence having these kinds of concepts and tools gives you.

Mackay also touches on topics that will be of utility to entrepreneurs and business owners - a group I hope to join. In my current position these ideas help me better understand the mind of many of the people I serve while at the same time building my understanding for my own future independent endeavors.

I purchased this book for $11.51. It is my opinion that the value is worth more than the price.

This story (not a book) was a complete waste of time and space on my kindle. There isn't anything good about it. This is the last part of what looks to be three separate books. Thank Goodness, I didn't have to spend money. It was all over the place and if I'm not mistaken it kind of sounds like different sci-fi movies. Anyway, this was a boring book, not worth the twenty minutes of my time. I am trying to stay away from these types of books. I generally, prefer whole complete novels. However, I do try to give authors chances. This author was presented as J A Felding, but it wasn't or maybe it's a pen name, who knows, but IT SUCKED BAD!!!!!

Amazing Read

Darien and Rose love story continues to amaze me. The couple is determined to create a family together and they will not deter although they constantly facing danger due to the fact that Darien is a vampire and a member of the paranormal elite group. Vampires are attacking werewolves and Darien. The vampires are using Darien's sister death to cause havoc. I love paranormal romance because they keep you on the edge of your seat. Throughout all the dangers, the couple managed to create a son together. I would recommend this book to anyone who believes that love conquers all. I cannot wait for the next installment in the series.

What a roller coaster ride. The opening to this follow up was nothing but fast paced and kept you in tune to each line. I felt like pacing with anticipation of what would happen next. I was drawn into the quest as I tried to solve the mystery that awaited. I thought of different scenarios and could not stop my mind and eyes from pushing forward. Wow, again. I would love to read more about this couple with their new addition. What an excellent read!!!

Andrei Voronin, a young astronomer plucked from Leningrad in the 1950s, is a die-hard believer in the Experiment, even though his first job in the city is as a garbage collector. And as increasinbly nightmarish scenarios begin to affect the city, he rises through the political hierarchy, with devastating effect. Thoughtful and thought-provoking piece of “serious” literature - now in excellent English translation

I first read “The Doomed City” in Russian more than twenty years ago, right when it was first published. This book is rightly considered the masterpiece of Brothers Boris and Arcady Strugatsky. And, I was gladdened to finally be able to share this book with my English-speaking friends. This translation is absolutely first class, very precise and spot-on. It follows closely the original written language, and does a fair job of capturing some uniquely idiomatic expressions that are frankly impossible to translate. The book still might pose a serious challenge to an American (or simply Western) reader, for whom some Soviet Russian social mores and traditions might be unfamiliar, and the uniquely sardonic mind-set might be utterly alien.
The book is sardonically dark, in a way that most Western readers may be un-accustomed to. While some Western-written novels like the “High-Rise” by J.G. Ballard, stories by Phillip K. Dick, and, of course, George Orwell “1984” are indeed comparably “dark” in tone, Strugatsky offer us a vision that is not so much action-packed, but uniquely bleak and oppressive, yet somehow also, understandably human, and even wise. There are fantastic elements, but they are used as a setting, not as the main focus of the book, which is always directed at the very real human condition. Overall, I think it is misleading to think of this book as a sci-fi. It is no more a sci-fi novel than J. Ballard’s “High-Rise”. What it is – is a thoughtful and thought-provoking piece of “serious” literature – perhaps the most important Russian novel written in the past fifty years. It joins a fine tradition of Russian literature of Gogol, Tolstoy, and Dostoyevsky, and, similarly, warrants attention and demands to be explored by any well-read person, especially as it is finally available in English.

A Long Lost Strugatsky's Masterpiece in English

(Note: I already reviewed this book on Goodreads, but I thought it would be better to give my review on Amazon since I bought the paperback from it.)

It's a great book, really. Though I do not know if it should belong with the authors' other masterpieces, such as "Hard to Be a God" and "Roadside Picnic," I think everyone would be interested in reading it.

The book is also the longest work than any other Strugatsky's books, as Boris explained in the afterword that it took three years for him and his brother to plan it and finally wrote it for another three years. But it was not published until sixteen years later, due to the dangerous time in the 1970s.

The book contains some allusions of the Soviet Union, where the people behind the Experiments act as the communist government, the City is their playground, and its inhabitants are their guinea pigs. According to the foreword, Dmitry Gluskhovsky, the author of "Metro 2033," relates how the City is like St. Petersburg. He explains that St. Petersburg went through periods of rough time, from the Bolshevik Coup to the Nazi blockade and to the communist regime. He describes that is how the City goes through during the course of the narrative, like the revolution where the farmers started a war against their government for not explaining why the sun could not turn on for the past week.

I would recommend it for anyone who is a Strugatsky fan or a newcomer to read it. This book is very philosophical at the last chapters of the book, and it would leave you surprised at the end.

What a book

To start off, this is truly a great book. A masterwork of science fiction and philosophy, this book probably being the most philosphical of the Strugatskys' works. Dealing with existence and life and what purpose to live is there, it's a fantastic novel, however at times, specifically at two points in the story for me, the philosophy seems to take over completely for a couple pages where the main charcter talks/thinks to himself about the philosophy at hand, with the second part occuring later in the book and resulting in a 2-3 page block of dialouge from the main character. Some may enjoy those ramblings that occur and absolutely love that block of text, for me though the story seemed yo crawl along during that period. Regardless, I thought it was a fantastic boom and enjoyed the realized and developed characters and the well crafted story

Good, but tedious politics

Pretty good overview of a variety of renewable energy systems. Certainly enough to get you started and then you can delve in more deeply on specific systems you are interested through other resources (but it will give a good foundation so you really understand what will and won't work for you). The only negative is that I could do without the author's very obvious political slant... had I wanted to read about that over and over (throughout the book), I would have chosen some other material.
