Great little novella

I always love novellas that feature characters from previous books in a series.

This novella centers on Arbella and Magnus. Five years after their marriage and their love is even deeper than it was in their book.

This is a very quick read, but it is chocked full of action and adventure as well a steamy love scene and a glimpse into their HEA.

Highly recommended if you have been following the series!

"A Reunion of sorts"

I really enjoyed this book- it was a treat to get to see how the characters from other books in the series had been, to find out about their families, and see that they were still very much in love.
I didn't like how things ended with Marmaduke Stewart and his evil wife Ina, and it wasn't believable the way Arabella and her sister ended up in a predicament, but other than those two issues; the book was a good read. I would definitely suggest you read. Magnus alone is exciting to read about, so you have to read this book.

Wild Highland Mistletoe revisits characters introduced in earlier books in the Stolen Bride series for a Christmas adventure. It was nice to see what happened to the different members of the Sutherland family. The story provides adventure, intrigue and romance. The only criticism is that novellas always seem too short to me.

This book is designed to help deal with such challenges. It includes a wide variety of examples of commonly encountered skeletal and nonskeletal grains, cements, fabrics, and porosity types. It includes extensive new tables of age distributions, mineralogy, morphologic characteristics, environmental implications and keys to grain identification. It also encompasses a number of noncarbonate grains, that occur as accessory minerals in carbonate rocks or that may provide important biostratigraphic or paleoenvironmental information in carbonate strata. With this guide, students and other workers with little formal petrographic training should be able to examine thin sections or acetate peels under the microscope and interpret the main rock constituents and their depositional and diagenetic history.

Petrography of Carbonate Rocks

Much like the Color Atlas of Rocks and Minerals in Thin Section, this book is visually appealing and informative. Unlike the Atlas, this book is exhaustive. The user will happily find thin section micrographs supplemented with cathodoluminescence and scanning electron microscope photos and many line drawings. At 474 pages, this book is a bargain. Petrographers everywhere should rejoice.

This book is a must for anyone studying, planning on writing a thesis, or working on carbonates. One can get this book for less than half the price than it is on here if you are a non-member of the AAPG (costs even less if you are a member).

Extraordinary tour of our imminent choices

Complete. Here and now. Solid. It takes the reader on a 360 degree loop, at least for the next 100 years. Professor Jaccard evidently knows how to deliver a class. Good economic analysis, just three things I wanted to mention:

1. The book needs a relative sense of the urgency for policy that fosters carbon capture -with its corresponding research of possible CO2 leaks- a starting point, if not the cornerstone of his proposal.
2. Idem 1 but for legislation that promotes the adaptation of new technologies (ingenuity) to replace the vanishing fossil fuels. These technologies are intrinsically linked to the success of the proposal as a whole.
3. I wasn't very convinced on the transportation front. If combustion from "Status Enhancement Vehicles" represents almost half of the total anthropogenic-related pollution, shouldn't we be focusing more on them? The current technologies are mentioned and explained, but transportation is key in our urban societies and needs a push from governments if a transition is to take place in the short run. Taxing private vehicle owners (Yes, like smokers!)could be a means to promote and build alternative clean transportation and at the same time curb driving.

I understand that the book cannot cover all the issues at hand. In 361 pages, it addresses and explains with surprising clarity our current situation and possible solutions. Worth every page.

Clean fossil fuel - an oxymoron?

Given all the talk of "peak oil" in the media, it appears that the public has accepted the message that we are running out of all manner of fossil fuels. Regardless, high pump prices aren't viewed as signs of increasing scarcity, but rather of increased collusion among big oil companies.

This book provides a very useful compendium of energy industry information, and argues convincingly that fossil fuels will not run out for quite some time. The information the book contains would go far to dispelling a lot of fossil fuel "urban myths" if energy consumers took the time to read it.

Other recently released books on energy and climate change encourage readers to "stick it" to big oil and big coal by going "off-grid", etc., and don't sufficiently explore how these same companies can play a role in a more sustainable energy future.

While fossil fuels may never be viewed as "clean" by the public, they will certainly endure for centuries as Jaccard attests. This book is a useful read for those interested in learning how to make fossil fuel-based economies more sustainable, using more facts and less media hyperbole.

Unsustainable sustainability

Jaccard's book is a good survey of many of the issues and problems surrounding energy use. But he pays lip service to some critically important issues.

Despite a few brief glimpses outside, Jaccard takes the usual economist's "closed system" approach and couples it with the usual technotopian idea that humans have the ingenuity to find technological fixes for virtually any problem. In talking about the future impact of human activity on the natural world, Jaccard comments that "any individual unavoidable hazards can be ones from which the system could recover within a reasonable time, either from natural processes alone or in concert with human remediation efforts" (p. 355)

A BBC News report that states that, due to human activity, "organisms are disappearing at something like 100 to 1,000 times the background levels' seen in the fossil record." ( [...] ) This loss of biodiversity has a direct impact on human health and wealth. To date, "natural processes" and "human remediation efforts" have not managed to bring back any extinct species.

Jaccard promotes the idea of "zero emission" fossil fuels at the point of use, but neglects the fact that large quantities of fossil fuels and resources are required by the operation of, and even production of, the machinery and infrastructure required to produce those fuels. He talks about the expansion of "clean" nuclear energy, but again neglects the emissions from mining, processing, and transporting fuel, storing and safeguarding spent fuel, and the construction of power plants and machinery. More importantly, Jaccard fails to mention the social irresponsibility of leaving behind toxic mine tailings and wastewater, spent fuel, and power plants that are decommissioned after their relatively short life span. Despite protocols and regulations, these will pose a hazard to future generations for thousands of years.

As a further example of "closed system" thinking, Jaccard talks about the expansion of "renewables," including solar and wind power, again without mentioning how dependent upon fossil fuels these energy sources are t present, for materials, production, and maintenance.

Finally, Jaccard neglects to mention that the growth he predicts depends heavily upon so many other resources, many of which are becoming increasingly scarce, and which rely on the current relatively cheap and abundant fossil fuels for extraction, processing, and production.

Despite the title of his book, Jaccard does briefly acknowledge that fossil fuel use, even in the manner he promotes, is not indefinitely sustainable, and would require enormous efforts and will to reduce GHG emissions, let alone solve all the other waste stream and resource issues. Indeed, almost appearing as repentance at the last minute, Jaccard's very last sentence acknowledges that a "sustainable fossil fuel future does not guarantee a sustainable human presence on this shrinking planet." (p. 361)

So much for sustainability.

Through his decades long siccessful business career, he allows us to walk within his dreams as he goes from one success to the next. His has been a great career that has, sadly, been overlooked. He sets forth many examples how he achieved his success in an easy to read format.

This book is a must read for any aspiring entrepeneur whether he/she is just out of college or looking to start a new business after retiring. Nothing should prevent starting a business to follow his/her dream. Remeber Dell was started in a college dorm, Hewlett-Pachard in a garage and post its was discovered when the engineer was looking for something else.

the best watercolor guide available

This is a model of concise instruction, wise advice, deceptively simple exercises, and compact design. Like they say on TV: if you buy just one watercolor book, make it this one.
Dewey gives equal emphasis to materials, theory, technique, the principles of design, and simple practice. He sees the whole art. He begins with an overview of paint manufacturers, brushes, papers and other supplies, and closes with an invitation to try mixed media and a step-by-step explanation of how to do a large studio painting. There are penetrating discussions of color theory and mixing paints, on selecting the palette for each painting, and on building a painting from value sketches.
The technical advice in this book is exceptionally accurate and easy to understand. The four pages explaining how to paint washes avoid the errors or omissions common in most other books. All topics are illustrated with pictures that add information rather than decorate the page. Dewey includes several traditional techniques that other methods don't mention: pen and ink wash drawings, value design sketches, using a sketchbook, monochrome paintings, color chords for color design, the "color" of gray, and much more. The book is so compactly organized that many gems of advice are tucked in the picture captions; the book can be studied repeatedly and still teach something new.
Dewey has painted the student lessons and technical examples displayed throughout the book. The more advanced lessons build on simple but beautifully designed demonstration paintings (my favorite is the still life on a patterned rug). Everything comes together in a harmonious vision of watercolor art, a reference and inspiration for many hours of happy experimentation and learning.

Dense with watercolor information

David Dewey's text on watercolor is not just another vanity book showcasing one artist's personal work, but a thorough in-depth introduction to both visualizing & handling a most difficult medium. Nor does it pretend to be an easy does it 1-2-3 & your painting watercolors type of book. Rather it is layered & dense with information that could easily keep you preoccupied for a year or more worth of instruction. Start with the monochromatic exercises in the beginning of the book & follow them religiously till you know them blindfolded. Do the same with the invaluable content on color theory & the related exercises. The lessons provided will reward you with a mastery of the medium & help you to find your own voice in watercolor. This book is not another feeble attempt at learning to carbon copy of someone else's technique. The many examples of various watercolor artist's work & their analysis is excellent as well.

Beginners must take a look at this book

I primarily wanted a book full of watercolor pictures by a contemporary artist plus instructions on how some of them are made. I had settled on about 3-5 books of which I intended to buy only one. Took a drive to Barnes and Noble, saw them all and I must say I was impressed by this one. Watercolor aficionados would have mostly heard of this author and artist. Amazing collection of pictures of not only the artist but his own selection of watercolor art from other major works with illustrative details of those art work. The only drawback I notice is that the details are restricted to current context and not much is said about that picture. I would have appreciated that kind of description. This is definitely an error which the author might want to take up in his next edition. Else... this book has great tips and instructions. When a learning artist thinks, "Damn it... how do I get that effect ?". This is a book that can be confidently consulted. Anyone looking for encyclopedic details on what the watercolor is all about and wishes to learn it all and get all the 3 credits from his/her couch from just one book aint going nowhere. This book is a superb reference. I guess the author did what he wanted to do. I did buy this book. B&N is $6 costlier but amazon charges that extra for shipping and it takes time.

Big Errors... buy only if required.

Barely two stars...
This text is full of typos, math errors, and oddly worded explainations and questions.
One example is on page 128 i believe, a reference page for trig functions. CosA is defined as Adjacent over Opposite here. I am truly sorry to any student who is required to use this product that was published to make a quick buck.

This does get two stars because the questions do have a variety of real world situations as discribed. This text turns math into a vocation instead if an abstract model.

Not very easy to follow

Not very easy to follow, not at all intuitive. The copy that I rented came through with the cover almost completely torn off. It is useable but is not in great shape. It was not what I expected. It is however the course textbook so I need to have it through this quarter. Thank you.

Those who do know of her likely remember her from her 90s era website Medea’s Chariot or from her 10+ years of contributions to Llewellyn annuals along with occasional submissions to Circle Magazine, SageWoman, the Beltane Papers and Facing North.� Her writing style is notable among Pagan writers because it almost never begins with a description of a walk in the woods. She is a 3rd degree Wiccan priestess in the Shadowmoon tradition, an� American Eclectic Wiccan tradition. She also has an Alexandrian 3rd (Janet Farrar > Star Foster > her) she has no interest in pursuing further in any� way. Her interests lay in the practical applications of magic to daily life and to the continuous discipline of getting better at it. She does understand how walks in the woods contribute to that process and were she not allergic to trees she might connect with that more.

She currently serves her community as an “on call” priestess for people with significant metaphysical concerns or those who just need a wedding or funeral officiant. She specializes in extending services to those who describe themselves as non-believers; to her spiritual need has nothing to do at all with religion. Rajchel explains, “I handle the weird metaphysical stuff people experience and don’t want to believe in so they can go right back to not believing in it.”

She runs on-hiatus the blog and business Fat Chic, a fashion and cultural criticism blog for plus size women. Fat Chic has been mentioned by both the New York Times and People Style Watch.

Rajchel lives in Minneapolis with her non-Pagan life partner. She is an urban gardener (she wears a mask when she does that stuff), runs a Doctor Who meetup fan group of over 900 members, and enjoys bellydance, Pilates, water aerobics and shamanic dance.� She is a devotee of Julia Cameron’s Artist’s Way series, and believes strongly in the use of Cameron’s techniques in spiritual pathwork as well as in creative career planning.

An excellent resource for Samhain

I've always been a fan of books published by Llewellyn. In college I purchased a few while I was studying alternative religions to support my research into rites and rituals that were central to Wicca and Witchcraft.

"Samhain" is another great example of the texts published by this publisher. The holiday was thoroughly researched. Extensive information has been provided covering every aspect of Samhain that I could think to question, ie origins, celebrations, history.

The rituals contained in this book are broken down piece by piece to ensure the reader has a very strong understanding. I think this text is an excellent resource for a beginner. I highly recommend it for anyone who is looking for a text on beginner level rituals or someone who is just interested and would like to know more.

The author's writing style is perfect for all readers as well. It's educational but not too austere. I feel that all level readers should be able to take this book and understand everything. The author has done an excellent job using language that is readily understood by many levels of readers.

Great intro to the most important sabbat

I've been pagan for almost 18 years, and I have been studying the pagan sabbats for a long time. The changing of the seasons and the dance the god and goddess have with each other has always been a main focus of my religion. I have almost all of the books written more than 10 years ago for the individual sabbats, but this series discusses all of the sabbats with a uniform format. While I knew a great deal of what they discussed in this book, there were some new things, and it is a great starting point for someone who either is new to paganism and just wants to learn more about the sabbats, or someone like me who would like to come back to the basics to relearn a few things I haven't looked at in years. I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to reading the other books in the series. I plan on reading them as the sabbats approach. Right now I have all of them except for Imbolc which hasn't been released yet. I'll start the Yule book in a few days.
