About the Author

Andrea Dini, a native of Prato, received his Laurea cum laude from the University of Florence and his Ph.D. in Italian Literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with a minor in Second-Language Acquisition. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Italian at Montclair State University. He was a co-author of the first and second editions of In giro per l’Italia: A Brief Introduction to Italian.

Graziana Lazzarino, a native of Genoa, received her Laurea cum laude from the University of Genoa and is currently Professor of Italian at the University of Colorado in Boulder. She has taught at numerous European schools and American colleges and universities, including Wellesley College, Middlebury College, Central Connecticut State College, and the University of Nebraska. She is also the lead author of In giro per l’Italia: A Brief Introduction to Italian, Da Capo, and Per tutti i gusti. She was knighted in June 2004 by the Italian government for her contribution to the teaching of Italian language and culture.

It's okay

This workbook is a little confusing at times but if you have the textbook, it is useful to help students practice and learn Italian. I like that it is specifically for the textbook "Prego" and they are by the same author... but I am not a huge fan of it. The price is pretty expensive considering this workbook isn't the best out there. I've bought several other workbooks that have helped me much more than this one, even though this one belongs to my textbook...

Great BUT

The item was in great condition, arrived quickly, and was cheaper than buying the bundled version of the textbook, lab manual, and workbook that Amazon sells Prego Book+WB/LM. The only problem is that bought separately, none of these come with the online QUIA access code, which is the only reason I spent a ridiculous amount of money on new copies of the books. Amazon sells the access code for $80 Quia Laboratory Manual Access Card for Prego![Access card only], but should really put that its not included in the product description page.

About the Author

David Light Shields, PhD, is an affiliate associate professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He was codirector of the Mendelson Center for Sport, Character, and Culture at the University of Notre Dame. In that role, he conducted research, designed educational programs, engaged in community outreach, built coalitions, and sponsored conferences and symposia. He also worked as a consultant with coaches, athletes, school administrators, and league officials to foster a better understanding of the relationship between competition and character. He coauthored the book Character Development and Physical Activity in 1995. Shields is founder and executive director of TrueCompetition.org, a nonprofit research and education organization focused on understanding and promoting true competition.

Dr. Shields is a member of the Moral Education Association. In 2007, he was named Sport Ethics Fellow by the Institute for International Sport in conjunction with National Sportsmanship Day.

Brenda Light Bredemeier, PhD, is an associate professor at the University of Missouri at St. Louis and a certified sport psychology consultant. Along with her husband, David, she was codirector of the Mendelson Center for Sport, Character, and Culture at the University of Notre Dame. She coauthored the book Character Development and Physical Activity in 1995. She was a founding board member of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology, a consultant for the NCAA, editorial board member of several professional journals, and an academy member of AAKPE. In 2007, she was named Sport Ethics Fellow by the Institute for International Sport in conjunction with National Sportsmanship Day.

Dr. Bredemeier was the McCoy Lecturer for the AAPHERD Research Consortium. With her husband, she has authored more than 50 books, articles, and book chapters.

A must-read if you work in sports or education!

According to David Shields and Brenda Bredemeier, contest situations, whether on the playing field or in the classroom, can lead to two different processes. With guidance, a contest is an opportunity for people to strive together- on opposing sides- to achieve excellence. Your opponent is your partner, bringing their best effort in order to push you to new levels of greatness. However, all too often, contests are filled with "decompetition" (coined by the authors), a process in which opponents strive against each other, and the focus changes to defeating your `enemy' rather than working to become a better athlete (or student, politician, etc). "True Competition" starts by discussing the common misidentification of decompetition as competition, and then elaborates on the differences between true competition and its ugly twin. Included in the book is a field guide, providing signs for coaches and parents that indicate the presence of either competition or decompetition, as well as tips for encouraging competition, a section on character's link to competition and cooperation, and in-depth discussion of the components of true competition and decompetition. This book will be valuable to anyone who works in sports, deals with children, runs a business, or engages in the political arena. We all encounter contests every day, and only by understanding the differences and causes of competition and its sinister counterpart can we begin to work towards "true competition", a process shown to increase productivity, motivation, and character. Yes, it is difficult to suddenly think of competition in a new light, and harder still to accept the addition of yet another word to explain something we thought we understood. But once your brain adjusts you will find that, like Malcolm Gladwell's "The Tipping Point", "True Competition" makes you view the world in a new way, and reexamine ideas you thought you understood.

Refutes "competition is bad" argument

True Competition is simply the best book on the subject of competition I have ever read. Too often, all we hear is a one-sided discussion of the downsides of competition. That framework often starts off with the assumption that competition is based on a "win at all costs" philosophy. True Competition gives the counter-argument. Competition, when rules of sportsmanship are appreciated, is actually cooperation. We are competing, but we are also cooperating in a self-improvement enterprise where we pit our skills and training against one another in an effort to help each other improve. I believe it was Ryan Hall who once said something to the effect that thirty or forty thousand people run big city marathons. There is one male and one female winner declared. Did all the others lose? If you can appreciate that concept, if you can appreciate how honorable striving can help us all to help each other improve, you will truly appreciate True Competition. I would also recommend PR Smith's books on Sportsmanship and the Sport and Character (Clifford and Feezell) as additional reading.

Incredibly timely topic addressed by a real expert

Finally! A book that addresses the sustainability implications behind design and technology platform choices that we make as marketers, designers and developers of digital marketing tools. I found the book comprehensive and eye-opening (e.g. if the internet were a country, it would be the sixth largest in terms of electricity use). I'm excited to try to apply some of these ideas into my own work and hope that making more sustainable design and development decisions becomes the norm for practitioners.

A Clarion Call

Designing for Sustainability is a must-read for designers and developers who care about the future of the planet - which, I assume is more than 90% of us! In clear terms, Tim illustrates for us how the web and the applications that power our digital, daily lives are also direct contributors to our warming planet.

Tim is able to use very technical terms and concepts in a way that a layperson can easily understand. (This is no easy task, as anyone who has helped an elder with a smartphone might attest.) At the same time, and throughout the book, Tim urges us to start thinking differently about our digital footprint, which is making up a larger and potentially catastrophic portion of of our carbon footprint.

Designing for Sustainability is much more than a book about design and sustainability. It is also a beautifully crafted clarion call to everyone who uses the web - currently standing at 3.5 billion people - to begin a conversation about how our adaptation of digital products is adversely impacting our climate and our environment. (Full disclosure: I was one of the many people Tim interviewed during the making of this book.) I hope you’ll consider devouring this book.

And three things seem clearly true: First, there are discussions (and portions of chapters) in this book that will help me speak with these students in a language they speak, about projects they may be undertaking. Second, there are portions of chapters that I can use, or draw upon, in the classroom. Third, I think that both the students (in IT, CS, and business) and I will see that we have more in come than we think.

Though some of the finer points and larger meaning of the book flew past me some of the time, I found the book interesting and readable. And didactically useful.

Read this with your pre-teens as a family! Excellent principles

I wanted to thank you for writing your book on Courtship and Dating. Although courtship is getting a bad rap these days, I think that the principles you outline in your book is so needed among young people, ESPECIALLY Christian families! I know many families who are afraid of going against the culture of giving privacy and independence to decide at the ripe old age of 14 to give themselves away sexually, emotionally, and physically. Last week, I shared the principles in your book (and lent the book) to a family that unintentionally hopped onto a train looking to wreck but thank the Lord their precious daughter immediately jumped off after realizing what a mistake it would be to follow this path! I think every parent (and their teenage children) should read this as a family in preparation for Biblical relationships with the opposite sex before it even starts. What a blessing!
