I am surprised by the number of negative reviews for what I consider to be a nicely written, well thought out, and logically presented introductory course on mathematical statistics. Yes, a working knowledge of elementary calculus is a prerequisite. But the mathematics invoked in the exposition of concepts and theorems are kept as simple as possible while maintaining that modest level of rigor appropriate for a introductory exposition. If you do not have the minimal mathematical prerequisites (such as freshman calculus), blame your instructor or your school for selecting an inappropriate text. But don't blame the authors! I thought the examples and problems were appropriate in their level of difficulty (mostly not so hard) and the relation to the material just covered. There are plenty of poorly written, impossibly dry, inpenetrable texts on statistics out there - this is not one of them. In addition, the book is attractively packaged, the paper quality is excellent, the visuals are informative and clearly presented - that also should not be taken for granted. Lastly the authors have a wicked entertaining sense of humor that spice the presentation throughout. I consider this book to be a welcome addition to the set of modern textbooks available to the curious serious student of probability and statistics.

This textbook is SO confusing and virtually useless. The examples in the chapters are of little help when it comes time to do assigned problems. This book writes with an expectation that all students can just look at a problem and know the answer almost instantaneously. If you are not intuitive with math this book will NOT be your friend. I do not intend to keep this one around.

I have just completed another class where the second half of the text was used for the the course. I have painstakingly tried to read this book hoping to better understand.
There are some subjects the book explains fine.
However there are a large amount of subjects that the book actually seems to move too quickly through. Skipping parts to their examples, skipping explanations at times and failing to mention that their examples may only pertain to a very particular kind of problem.

The authors also have written the methods to doing certain types of problems in ways that almost make no sense, partially due to poor use of symbols within the equations. I used this book to try and do my homework and I would use the examples as a guide, it proved to be a mistake, those problems I often had to do over again after talking with my instructor.

If you have no choice but to use this textbook I recommend finding some supplemental materials when a topic seems to not make much sense that might help you understand a little better. Get a book on probability and one on statistics and definitely do not hesitate to speak to your instructors if things get confusing because this textbook just is not good enough on its own for comfortable understanding of probability and statistical theory methods.

About the Author

SOM PRAKASH SRIVASTAVA, MSc, DPhil, has forty-five years of research experience in the field of fuels, lubricants, and additives. He is a former executive director of the R&D center of Indian Oil Corporation (a global Fortune 500 company), and Director of Indian Oil Blending Ltd and Iftex Oils & Chemicals Ltd. Dr. Srivastava has been responsible for developing an entire range of fuels and lubricants for the Indian Oil Corporation. The author and coauthor of 200 research papers, thirty patents, and four books, Dr. Srivastava is currently an independent consultant on fuels and lubricants.

JENŐ HANCSÓK, MSc, Doctor of Hungarian Academy of Sciences, is head of the MOL Department of Hydrocarbon and Coal Processing at the University of Pannonia and a consultant of the international oil and gas company, MOL Plc. He is the author or coauthor of more than 700 papers and presentations, and holds fourteen patents that are applied in the chemical industry. Maddening

Barry Hannah spent most of his adult life as a hopeless but somehow functioning alcoholic, which doesn't come as any surprise to someone who has read this collection of short stories. I would be gobsmacked to learn that any of these stories had been written by anyone even remotely sober. That doesn't positively affect the quality of these stories, but it doesn't completely ruin them either. A few of the stories in this collection were fantastic ("Testimony of Pilot" being the very best), a few were impressive but ill-conceived or seemingly pointless ("Knowing He Was Not My Kind Yet I Followed"), and quite a few were nothing but funny-bizarre sentences placed at random on the same page as other funny-bizarre sentences. By my count, there is not a single story in this entire collection that does not mention: 1) booze; 2) snatch. There are few stories in this collection that actually work as "stories" in the sense of an interrelated chain of events or states put together in a meaningful order. Overall, the impression you get is one of incredible talent simply hosed onto the page without any real self-discipline.

If you ask me (that "me" being someone who will certainly never be a great writer -probably not even a decent one), Barry Hannah could have achieved true greatness if only he'd learned how to rein in all the overblown surreality without killing all that passion and verbal talent. If literature were nothing but one shocking sentence after another, then Barry Hannah would have been the sum of a billion Shakespeares. What we have got here, though, is still worth reading and still worth four stars.

A New Approach to the American Story

Airships is a book that breaks apart expectations of what the short form can do. The language is so exacting and unique as to put this book in a league of its own. The stories are themselves alternately Gothic and realistic, but regardless of the mode, the intelligence behind the narrative is plain scary. The story "Testimony of Pilot" may be the single best short story I've ever read. When I pick up this book, I literally feel my pulse quicken. Hannah is one hell of an amusement ride. This is a great intro to the rest of his work.

Good, but same author as Haynes book.

This book is well written, but I found out that it is exactly the same book as the "Haynes Repair Manual" for this same car. I thought I'd buy two different manuals for doing shocks, struts and clutch replacement on my 2002 Mustang, but it turns out that the same author wrote both books, so they are word-for-word the same exact book with the same pictures, just a different font so the page layout is slightly different. I was able to complete all the above projects using the step-by-step instructions in this manual.

I like the Chilton much better and the car we bought ...

We have always gotten a manual with every car we have bought and usually get the Haynes. I decided on the Chilton this time because of reviews and friends (mechanics) I know made the suggestion. I like the Chilton much better and the car we bought it for was my son's 16th birthday present and it really helps him when he's learning where things are and how to do them. I have read through the Chilton and it is much nicer than the Haynes manual. To bad they don't include the convertible mustang though,

Chilton's Mustang Manual is Great

Chilton's, as usual, lives up to it's reputation as the "Go-to" book for auto repair. With everything from how to tear down and rebuild your engine, transmission and rear-end to wiring diagrams, this is a complete book for either someone who wants to work on their own car, or someone who wants to know more about their car. I highly recommend it.
