The English, by Geoffrey Elton

A survey of the English experience through a thousand years and more, this book concentrates on the lasting characteristics of a people who early on discovered the fact of a national identity. The outstanding hallmarks of this experience were the existence of a strong central authority (in the monarchy), the provision of a system of law, and with these two the possibility of preserving individual rights and liberties in the face of a long sequence of historical vicissitudes.

From Library Journal
The increased focus on science is educationally correct, but without the study of history the foundation of all learning is soft. Elton, who taught history at Cambridge, clearly traces the shaping of the English people from barbarian groups to those who came to be called English to the ascendancy of "the mighty British." The book provides a perspective on the grueling development of governing and governance. Though the anglicized spelling may deter some readers, public libraries will find this a viable purchase; it is also a welcome choice for school libraries.

Review
"This book will surely be recognised as the best single-volume concise history of England - lively, authoritative, and yet personal and humane. Only Elton could have written it." Michael Clanchy

"This work is thoughtful, witty, and graceful in style, a marvel of compression ... Elton argues forcefully that the English formed, and were formed by, a unique reconciliation of individual freedom with monarchically supervised order. Like Joseph Strayer's on The Medieval Origins of the Modern State (1986), this splendid work is a brief distillation of a lifetime of thoughtful scholarship and deep reflection." Choice

"Anyone may enjoy this book." The Times

"A study that is both authoritative and individualistic, showing a full awareness but not a full acceptance of recent research." Teaching History

From the Back Cover
During the fifth century following the withdrawal of the Roman military establishment from England, the armed incursions of the Angles, Saxons, Jutes and others of the Barbarian tribes from across the North Sea increased, and soon became a surge. After a relatively short time the subjugation of the British was complete and England a patchwork of warring domains and isolated settlements. Yet within the space of two centuries the English (as the tribes may collectively be called) had achieved a sense of themselves that may fairly be described as nationhood. It is the evolution of this sense and of the distinctive characteristics of England and the English that gave it form and substance which Geoffrey Elton traces through twelve centuries. The result is the first one-volume history of the English nation from its origins to the present for over twenty years: it is a tour de force.

Enjoyable, but a little too tightly packed at times
By A. Berke
I will start off by saying that on the whole, I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It presents a very nice overview of the English people, paying particular attention to items of political and religious importance. The development of the common law, the history of the relationship between King and Parliament, and the geopolitical involvement of the English are all covered in detail. The author also takes the time to point out in a few instances where other modern authors (mainly ones attached to Marxist thought, it seems) have min-construed some event or writing and tied to it greater significance that it likely deserves.

Additionally, there is a fascinating discussion at the tail end of the book on 'English' versus 'British', in terms of how one could/should think about the people involved at any given time in their history. The discussion, in particular on page 233 and following, cites examples of where it was really the 'British' who did something (such as building a global empire, with the help of Scots, Welsh, and Irish in addition to English - thus, British), while at the same time the English were still a distinct 'people'. As Elton puts it, they were, "...a nationality but not a nation...". I point this section of the book out because it was both something I'd never thought about before, and something that made a lasting impression on me. It is, I admit, rather mundane but having always though of the British as such, to see where distinctions could and should be drawn was enlightening!

I will nitpick just a bit and say that there were times as I read this book that I felt that I needed extra information to really understand the arguments being laid out. I was mildly frustrated at the occasional assumed knowledge, potentially contrary to the claim of 'accessible' highlighted on the back cover. At other times, I felt the text moved too fast and I wanted more information.

It is truly a whirlwind tour of a millennium, and despite my mild frustrations I enjoyed this book and am glad I acquired it!

Finally a ruling class that is also a people?
By Douglas E. Libert
most of the people written about in this series have either vanished or have been absorbed into a larger nation/state but the English are both a people and a country so i realized the author is tackling a big order.Almost as hard for me to review it with anything that sounds sensible. You can't end this book with, they just faded away but we still have their(law or buildings)! So the English were originally a ruling class that developed into a nation so how did they do it?Maybe the question should be asked in another hundred or so years. It would have to be defined from more than "cradle to grave" socialism since about every modern nation is there and i notice how the authors of this series avoid the topic.Since these island territories have strict water boundaries maybe these warrior/farmer bands early decided to either try to get along or if not that then bury the enemy deep or use more moderate yet equally harmful forms of violence to relegate him to obscurity or trivial amusement. An intersting paragraph or 2 on British lawyers and how over the years they fancy themselves as knights defending the barons. Initially though they were more related to the greasy,(sleazy)religious cleric bureaucrats of the Dark Ages who defended the "flock"from the nobles.A little sleaze in defense of the downtrodden, just the thought gave me some from fresh air. Also being an Island nation,it would be easy to become socially, economically and ideologically isolated,a dangerous situation ripe for foreign invasions,so the oceans since prehistoric times are the lifeline.I had heard it mentioned that British zeal at making colonies is an overcompensation for fear of isolation.Elton states the English temperament as "litigous and difficult to rule"and from the read on this book the final tally of who the English are is being continually defined but a close look at political, economic, social, and religiuos movements since prehistoric times show a people not inclined to take a back seat for anyone.there are alot of interesting interpretations in this book. For one,it shed light on the "War Hawk" movement of the early 1800's in the United States. The War Hawks wanted to go to war with Britain in 1812 over numerous issues including the "impressment of sailors to serve on British ships".I always thought this stretched credibility (what there weren't plenty of sailors)?Elton has somewhat cleared this up by reminding me that Britain had abolished the slave trade in 1803 and actively intercepted other ships to search for contraband and slaves.Maybe the "War Hawks" were really upset that the British were interrupting their slave trade and those "impressed sailors" never really impressed the War Hawks at all. This book has alot of these type interpretations which one can misinterpret to his own ends, the mark of a good book!

The Collected Stories of Carol Emshwiller, Vol. 1, by Carol Emshwiller

Crossing the boundaries between fabulist literature, science fiction, and magical realism, the storiesin this collection offer a valuable glimpse into the evolution of Carol Emshwiller s ideas and styleduring her more than 50-year career. Influenced by J. G. Ballard, Steven Millhauser, Philip K. Dick, and Lydia Davis,Emshwiller has arange of works thatis impressive and demonstrates her refusal to be labeled or to stick to one genre. This exhilarating new collection marks the first time many of the early stories have been published in book form and is evidence of the genius of Emshwiller, one of America s most versatile and imaginative authors.

From Publishers Weekly
In her introduction, Emshwiller (The Secret City) says, "I've never known quite what to call my writing." Readers of this offbeat collection of more than 80 short stories spanning nearly five decades might apply labels such as murder mystery, hard science fiction, magical realism, and narrative nonfiction. 1954's "Built for Pleasure" anticipates The Stepford Wives by decades, but is followed by two tales with similar premises, diluting its impact. The transition from mail-order wives to feminist writings, including musings on female genitalia and a story accompanied by drawings of breasts in profile, is abrupt and jarring. The contents are arranged chronologically and unfortunately bereft of authorial notes that might bring some order to the chaos. SF fans may want to skip straight to the moving Nebula-winning "Creature" and otherwise select their own "best of Carol Emshwiller" from this overly comprehensive collection. (Apr.)

Too literary for me, but you know your own taste
By Elizabeth A. Root
I've rated this a 3-stars although I would prefer not to rate it at all, since my reaction is largely a matter of taste. Two people on LibraryThing gave it 5-star ratings, but no reviews.

One of the most haunting stories that I ever read was written by Carol Emshwiller, Unfortunately, it is not in this book, although it was of this time period, but having found "Adapted" again, I decided that I wanted to read her other work. Carol Emshwiller tends to be described as a science fiction writer, but Luis Ortiz tell us in Emshwiller: Infinity x Two: The Life & Art of Ed & Carol Emshwiller, a biography chiefly of her husband, but secondarily of Carol, that she decided to break out of the genre and into more literary work. She certainly seems to have succeeded.

Emshwiller tells us in her introduction that she went through three stages in her writing, first, learning to plot, next, learning to hit her subconscious, and last, learning not to plot. I enjoyed the earliest stories, but most of these works seem to be after she stopped plotting. After much labor, I am about halfway through this book, and I suppose I will finish the book, but I find most of her work to be as enthralling as reading the cereal box during breakfast, and some of the worst could be collections of nonsense syllables.

Emschwiller has real writing ability, and a gift for description, but most of her works after the first dozen simply don't interest me. The most interesting part of her later stories is that she prefers not to explain the situation in which the character finds him or herself, but to let the reader put it together from the generally first-person narrative, which does a bit to replace the lack of a plot. Otherwise, I lived through this school of writing when it was new, and it hasn't improved with age.

On the matter of hitting one's self-conscious, I remember a college professor explaining that feeling something doesn't mean that it is a good work. As he said, perhaps one sees flies on a window and suddenly the meaning of life becomes clear and one writes down "Flies." That isn't a meaningful piece of work, although absurdists might argue that it is.

If one wants to argue that life doesn't have a plot, that is true, but we live life, we shouldn't need to read it. Emshwiller does appear to have returned to plotting later in life, so maybe I will try some of her later work.

"Adapted", which I still recommend, especially for anyone who has wondered if they are on the wrong planet, originally appeared in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, May 1961, and later in Rod Serling's Devils and Demons.

Waste of a talent
By Simon Barrett 'Il Penseroso'
Who knew a book this big could be this good? The first bit, anyway. As well as being a yarn-spinner, Emshwiller has a moral voice altogether refreshing. There's a kind of innocence, but also a kind of clear-sightedness, that I fear we may have lost. Although a large volume, it has been put together with evident care. Aside from the proof-reading, that is. Proof-reading? What proof-reading? Ah well. A younger, more refined Charles Beaumont? Love it, misprints* and all. Can Rudy Rucker's 2v complete or Kit Reed's recent uber-selected possibly compare?

At 1/3 in, I can see why her reputation's been a long time coming. In the Sixties, following a six-year hiatus, she migrated from the pulps to the little magazines. Were the Sixties good for Carol E? Well, were they good for Charles B? TV's gain (The Twilight Zone) was arguably prose narrative's loss. As for Emshwiller, too literary (intelligent?) for genre (as practised in the Fifties) she is just too darn genre to cut it as literature. Four hundred pages of what feel like arid writing exercises, Carol? We are supposed to be impressed? Sometimes less can be more. Five stars for those early ones though - sheer enjoyment

* How about this, from page 180: 'the river does not How [flow?] across that whole wrist of land'

A teenaged girl with an ageless power. A rebellion that begs her to use it for vengeance. A follower in the sky that she cannot outrun. And a choice that will change her life. Set in Petros, an ancient Greece-like land of mesmerizing myths and monsters, MOONBOW follows Iris, a despairing young woman who has spent three agonizing years as a slave to Acheron, the sadistic officer responsible for burning her brother alive. But when Iris's own life is threatened at the bronze tip of an outlaw's blade, she receives an astonishing, long-awaited power, and with it, the confidence and weapon she needs to fulfill her greatest desire: avenge her brother, or die trying. If only the Moonbow, that unavoidable symbol of redemption shining in the sky, would let her be... Armed with a warrior’s dagger and an explosive new power, Iris finds herself at the headquarters of the zealots who call themselves the Soukinoi after the sacred amber scrolls they house inside their temple. Their leader is Diokles, a charismatic, godlike man who captivates Iris with his passion and vision to liberate all of Petros from its oppressors, and most importantly, train her skill and lead her to Acheron. Overcome by her obsession, Iris now calls herself Hunter, and will stop at nothing, not even the killing of innocents, to reach her goal. But on the day she reunites with Tycho, a mysterious former Soukinoi who has been taken prisoner by Diokles and sentenced to death, Iris can't fight the urge to speak up for his life. Now, both she and Tycho are on Diokles's blacklist, and only a single misstep stands between them and a fatal encounter with the Gryphon, the gigantic, flesh-eating bird Iris thought existed only in myth. After Tycho's escape, Iris knows her time is short. While being escorted back to Diokles, she receives alarming information about her brother's death and finds out that Diokles's plans are far more sinister than they seem. Wrestling with strong feelings of guilt and disillusionment, and unable to dispute the supernatural happenings around and within her, Iris must decide whether the Moonbow truly does hold the answers she's searching for…

First Novel? Well done.
By M. K. Travis
Diana Anderson-Tyler has woven together a tale rich with references to the Ancient Greek pantheon and the inner workings of ancient life. This has mythical creatures, mythical religions, and a not-so-friendly manifestation of Apollo. In a word, Anderson-Tyler knows her history and mythology. Her way of incorporating it into her story added depth and nuance to the book.

The story itself is about a young, bitter woman seeking revenge against her murderous master. However, her newly discovered power leads her on a circuitous journey that takes her further away from her master and achieving her desired goal. But this is a journey, and with any journey in a book or movie, the stated goal isn't usually the main goal. Thus, the novel is an adventure of physical and emotional endurance, of conflict and trial, and yes, of self-discovery.

I admit that from the beginning I didn't really like Iris that much as a character. Her vindictive spirit blind and limits her. However, this is likely Anderson-Tyler's aim, for Iris becomes more settled and whole as her journey continues. She is aided by some strong, yet misunderstood, characters (Tycho and a crusty, yet faithful, centaur) as well as misled by some slippery, misguided warriors. In learning who to trust, Iris learns about herself as well.

The story is told in a first person, present tense voice, similar to Katniss Everdean in The Hunger Games books. It's tricky to write in first person without sounding too clunky and stiff or artificial and contrived, but Anderson-Tyler pulls it off fairly well for the most part. In addition, there are several flashback scenes because so much of what drives Iris happened in the past. I found these scenes occassionally distracting, but they certainly give the reader an insight in what moves and motivates Iris.

Like the other reviewers, I too found myself reading on to "see what happens next." So even though I wasn't particularly fond of Iris, I did want to see how her story would end and how she would change. (I absolutely WANTED her to change! She needed to change to win a reader over.) Anderson-Tyler's handling of the end of Iris's journey delivers far and away more satisfaction than the slower middle portion of the book. Finishing the book--and Iris's journey--was worth the read.

This book is so jammed packed with ideas, I cannot wait to get back into the classroom this fall to try some of them. The ideas presented in this book will hopefully make it easier to connect with and implement activities for culturally different learners. The book also gave me a new perspective and philosophy for learners from different cultures.

Hypocritical
By Sarah
The book attempts to discuss the importance of multiculturalism within America's educational system, yet, the author's method of discussion throughout the book portrays biased and hypocritical views. The book intends to inform readers to stray away from prejudices and personal opinions, yet, the author seems to include his own prejudice views making his book hypocritical of the very point he attempts to conjure. He makes various comments throughout the book that disclose negative personal opinions upon current education within America's schools and educator's "white" methods of teaching. I agree with his claims on the need for educators to incorporate a more multicultural perspective in teaching, but he seems to boast more on his negative views and multicultural issues in education throughout the book, rather than including ideas and advice for educators on improving it.

    Chapter 1

    From Victim To Victor

    I can see clearly now the rain is gone;

    I can see all obstacles in my way;

    Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind;

It's gonna be a bright, bright sunshiny day.

Johnny Nash, "I Can See Clearly Now"

November 6, 1996. It is the morning of the New York City Marathon. I wake while it is still dark. To protect myself from the unseasonable early autumn cold, I dress in several layers of running gear. Suddenly, moments from my past come flooding back. It's then and now all at once.

I am five, crying because I want to play outside with the other kids, and my mother forbids it. I am sixteen, sneaking away from my friends to take my medication. I am twenty-five, angry because I can't run without carrying my inhaler. Then suddenly, it's last night. I am watching them paint the finish line in a wide, red swath across the black pavement of Central Park. The lights of the city begin coming on in the surrounding buildings. I have a hard time believing I'm finally here.

I exhale and come back to now, to this minute, this second, to the sound of Sting on the radio. For a few moments I sit there with the music, just inhaling the sound. Then I close my eyes and imagine doing what I've been told my whole life was impossible: I see myself crossing the finish line triumphant, breathing freely, completing the race that for years I've hoped and prayed I would one day be able to run.

My goal is simple: to run through all five boroughs of my favorite, city, to have fun, to complete the race, and not to get caught up in the competition. How well I do, how long it takes, isn't important. Just running this marathon and completing it is enough!

At 10:45 A.M., twenty-nine thousand runners wait to begin. The sunlight glints off the Verranzano Narrows Bridge, and I feel an excitement so electric my body vibrates. At the sound of the starting gun, we begin the race. Through the noise of the helicopters overhead, I hear the voices of the crowds on the opposite shore, the pulsating music, and words shouted in more languages than I can count.

As I run I sense changes in the pavement beneath my feet, in' the neighborhoods, the odors, the play of shadows and light, and at' this moment, life is perfect. I am exactly where I want to be, doing what I have dreamed of doing for years.

The doctor's words stun me. "You will never run a marathon," -he! says. I ask more questions. I argue. He shrugs, looks at his watch, and reminds me that I am lucky to be alive. I have never forgotten his voice. Wish he could see me now.

I remind myself to go easy. After ten mites my right leg, the one I fractured during a nearly fatal accident two years ago, begins to hurt. I concentrate on maintaining my own steady rhythm. 11 imagine breathing in the blue tine painted along the course, the same blue line I visited the day before; somehow this eases my pain and carries me forward.

Thirteen point one miles. I'm halfway there. The summit of the Pulaski Bridge is quiet, suspended in time, with the towers of Manhattan looming beyond.

Fifteen miles. We approach the 59th Street Bridge. Thousands of us pound across the grating toward Manhattan, where crowds line the streets. They hand us chocolate, apples, and oranges that we reach out and grab. At 83rd Street and First Avenue, my sister waits for me, along with some friends. They smile and shout out my name; they are relieved that I'm still going strong. I use their encouragement as a talisman of hope.

My sister is playing outside with her friends. She is younger, but she can do things I can't. I am jealous. I wish for some kind of magic to set me free. I wait months, years. But the magic words never get spoken. The spell remains intact. I pray. I promise. I bargain. I dream.

Twenty miles. We enter the Bronx. The discomfort in my leg is intense, but I force myself to keep moving. I pass Yankee Stadium. I get a rush remembering their World Series victory. I begin to sing "I Can See Clearly Now," a Johnny Nash song I heard while driving to work a few months ago. It reminds me of the long journey I have taken to get here. Other runners join in. I feel energized and inspired.

We enter Harlem. I've been running five hours. The enthusiasm of the crowd pulls me along. It helps to keep the tiredness at bay. Not so long now, I think.

Five miles left. I begin to anticipate what they call the "dreaded hills" of Central Park. It seems only moments later that I see the Metropolitan Museum on 82nd Street and realize by some miracle we have passed them.

Toward 59th Street, the crowds thin out. As we enter the park, those still waiting outside the Plaza Hotel cheer us on as a pathway shaped by the late afternoon sun guides me to the finish line. Crossing it in slow motion, I wrap my mind around this moment, this feeling, this lifetime dream.

I am runner 26,948, woman 6,806, a champion! Without medication and suffering no ill consequences, I have completed one of the world's most famous marathons-me, an asthmatic since early childhood.

The spell is broken. The magic is real, and I want it to last forever…

Well Worth Reading -- And Trying
    By A Customer
The first time I ever heard the word "psychosomatic" was in a high school English class. We had been assigned our first research papers, ever. And one of the Class Brains was reading his, on the subject of "The Psychosomatic Origins of Asthma". An asthmatic himself, he had seen four specialists and studied all the available literature on the disease. Back then, in the late 1950s, holistic treatment wasn't even a blip on the medical radar screen. Some twenty years later, when I had the good fortune to meet a Harvard-trained MD who subscribed to the notion that most disease had at least part of its origin in how we perceived ourselves and our world, I had the first-hand opportunity to put that belief to the test. Joining with this doctor, and several other medical and mental health professionals (of which I hasten to add, I am neither) in what he called "a healing group" we worked with seriously ill people to help them overcome their diseases through meditation and visualization. The success rate, while well below 100% was dramatic, and the impact it continues to have on my life, twenty years after moving across the country, has been similarly impressive. Obviously, I believe strongly in the mind-body connection, so this book caught my eye. Having recently lost a sister who simply would not consider anything other than classic, HMO-approved medical treatment for her catastrophic asthma-related illness, I suppose I reached for "Asthma-Free..." more out of a sense of frustration than to put it to any specific use. Nonetheless, I found it to be a valuable introduction into the science -- and I do think it IS a science -- of healing through visualization. The endorsement of classically trained physicians was certainly impressive. But even more impressive was the common-sense of it all...and the results that Ms. Shafer cited in her own case. I can't say whether every asthma patient has the belief system or the commitment to put this regimen to a full, fair test, but I do believe this eminently accessible and well-thought-out book offers some new techniques -- and new hope -- for those willing to give it a try.

    Asthmatic relief through behavior modification
    By joseph m
The healing technique used in this book is largely based on behavioral modification. For that reason, it has been misunderstood as a non-medical, non-scientific treatment. To the degree that asthma is related to behavior--any kind of behavior, including fear response, eating, and environment--this book can help an asthma sufferer.
Asthmatic "behavior" in this book is modified mostly through imaging--replacing the thoughts and feelings that accompany the onset of asthma with thoughts and feelings that are contrary to the typical experience. It is a powerful tool, and to the degree that someone's asthma is amplified or even catalyzed by behaviors, this book can be helpful to someone to that degree.
This book is NOT a new age book, nor is it any kind of introduction to new age spirituality. Scientific method is abundant throughout it; nonetheless the book remains fun.
Finally, I found any "new-age" label the book receives to be completely ironic. that the book begins with a question posed by a doctor to one of the co-authors that is identical to the question another famous healer, Jesus, posed a man who had been ill for 38 years: "Do you WANT to get better?" This simple question is the best possible point of origin for the curing of an asthmatic.
