Excellent for Beginners and Professionals Alike

As part of a mentoring program, I was once asked to coach and supervise someone who was about to give his first major presentation in front of his peers and key decision makers. He dismissed all the advice that he was given and said, rather breezily, that he had a strong background in amateur dramatics, so he knew exactly how to deliver a speech. The outcome was predictable but still sad. He knew all about how to project his voice and how to achieve rapport and get a quick laugh, but that was about it.

People who know nothing about professional speaking assume that it's easy. When somebody once asked me my fee for a speech, I saw the eyebrows shoot upwards: "For an hour's work????" I was asked.

"No," I responded, "For thousands of hours of research, preparation and practice." Any professional speaker would say the same. It is no different from a professional musician, dancer or comedian.

If Alan Weiss's book had been available back then, I would have asked my mentoree to read it.

It is precise, specific and also lays out the big picture. So often books like this are full of self-congratulation, but this one really does deliver.

No book in the world will do everything for you. But if you really do want to be a speaker and you have something to say which will enrich your audience: read this book; take action on its contents; contact other professionals in your area, or organizations like the National Speaker's Association and then take massive action to get started!

Best information on 'speaking career strategy' I have read

First of all, the production quality of this book is crap. The thing was falling apart the first time I opened it. I dont like having to be careful with a book like this, particularly one I want to mark up, highlight, go back to time and time again.

Now then, we are getting to the point of the book in the first place. I wouldn't care if this thing was in cuneiform pressed into wet clay tablets. There is more practical and useful information in this book on how to strategically set up your speaking career than I have seen in any of the dozen or so other books that I have read. You could literally take the advice in this book - and virtually nothing else - and plan out your speaking career for the next ten years.

The author's practical trashing on some of the 'rules of thumb' of the game (e.g., raising fees) are not mere opinions: this guy has lived this and has the income history to back up his claims.

Some of the references are outdated (the book is nearly 10 years old as of my writing) so you have to get passed that. The info on how to establish yourself as an expert through writing books and creating other income streams through developing info products is sound but has been superseded by far more complete and recent writings (Stephanie Chandler's book "From Entrepreneur to Infopreneur" is a great reference for that).

The exercises on 2 PAGES (35 and 46) alone made reading this worthwhile.

The focus on offering value is the key. This is what I focus on in my own coaching and speaking and, for that matter, what I spend a lot of time teaching to my clients.

Breaks the old rules

If you have read "Speak and Grow Rich" or similar books, then you will very much enjoy this refreshing take on the speaking industry. The author breaks down all of the old speaking industry myths and affirms that anyone can make it in the speaking business. Old industry axioms such as "raise your fees when demand exceeds supply" and "specialize in a few areas of speaking" are blasted by the author's advice to raise fees when the value you offer to the customer increases, and to offer clients as many services as you are comfortable providing (e.g. wide range of topics as well as delivery formats (keynotes, training, etc.)).

This book is VERY customer-centric; that is, the author looks at speaking/training/workshops as a catalyst for evoking change (e.g. improved communication, increased sales) and believes they should produce tangible results that last long after the speaker has left the client site. This is far different from the tone of other books which seem to indicate that speaking is an ego-centric medium and that platform skills are more important than value delivered.

In short, the author speaks volumes on delivering real, measurable value, in both speaking, writing (articles, books, etc.) and any products you develop and sell. He furvently denounces egomaniacal motivations and condones making the absolute best effort to provide buyer/client satisfaction.

Other topics the author touches on: business insurance, incorporating your business, speaker's bureaus (why they need you, not the other way around), and marketing strategies (this is lightly touched upon).

Be forewarned that the author writes about catering to business clients rather than to individual consumers, so you will not find information regarding developing and marketing consumer centric seminars (although he does touch (very) briefly on the college and private seminar market). If this is what you are looking for, may I recommend a book by Robert W. Bly or by Paul Karasik.

This is a wonderful book that will likely leave you with a "it's not as hard as the other books said" feeling. My recommendation is that you read "Speak and Grow Rich" by the Walters duo first (it's got excellent information about every aspect of the business, despite its shameless self-promotion) then go on to reading Weiss' superb work.

This is the sort of book that gives self-published authors a bad name. For a book that claims to give evidence, the lack of attribution for his sources is stunning. There is no indication that any of the images are used with permission and there are large sections that are copied from others' work in a manner that resembles plagiarism.

Great for self study!

This is an excellent book for self study. It does an amazing job illustrating the multitude of chemical processes that are at play in the atmosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere. The problems at the end of each chapter are really there to help one master the theoretical applications of envrion chem, and may be difficult to work out on your own. Otherwise this is a great book if you just want to ascertain a greater understanding.

Useful Textbook, Easy Read, Good Information.

This book was used for my upper level Environmental Chemistry class for my bachelor's degree. The text in this book was very clear and topics were easy to understand. The author did an excellent job blending science with readability. The book arrived on time and in excellent condition. I did not trade it back in or sell back at school. I now use it as a reference in the environmental testing industry.

This is a great book!

I am no Chemist. I actually bought this book for my Russian friend from Moscow that I will meet up with this summer. I must admit. One of my books I bought went to the wrong address, so I bought this book from this seller. This book look so new and smelt so new!! I will have to disgard the other book from the other seller, and keep this book! The book came quickly, the seller was very kind. This book is new and everything is intact. I am sure my friend will be very happy!

Especially, I would have wanted to know the basic of linear transient growth and corresponding adjoint problems, which are extended to non-linear case recently by some top-level researchers. About the Author
Elizabeth Caldwell Hirschman was born in Kingsport, Tennessee and is of Melungeon descent. She is Professor of Marketing at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Professor Hirschman has contributed more than 200 articles, essays and chapters to professional journals and books, and is author of more than a dozen books, including When Scotland was Jewish (also co-authored with Donald N. Yates). Hirschman's research indicates the earliest American settlers were of Mediterranean extraction, and of a Jewish or Muslim religious persuasion. Sometimes called "Melungeons," these early settlers were among the earliest nonnative "Americans" to live in the Carolinas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia, perhaps including Daniel Boone, John Sevier, Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, and Andrew Jackson. She is currently at work on a history of English crypto-Jews from the beginnings to the Enlightenment. She lives in New Jersey and spends part of the year teaching in Virginia.

Donald N. Yates is an American genealogist, author, and principal investigator at DNA Consultants. He holds a Ph.D. in classical studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has published popular and scholarly works in cultural and ethnic studies, history and population genetics.

Cowan sounds like Cohen; Hepburn sounds like Hebron...

I thought the book was highly entertaining and thought provoking. The authors do a thorough job of documenting their hypothesis (including official admission from the royal family that their ancestors are Davidic...is it just wishful thinking?), though historical survey, family genalogy, DNA analysis, and other circumstantial factors. Taken individually, none of these sources would be suggestive, but not too convincing. However, the authors do a good job of putting the various sources together to try to weave a comprehensive story. In the end, it is still in the domain of hypothesis with some intriguing evidence (perhaps cherry-picked in places, and not as rigorous as it could be). But for me, that is exactly what makes the book interesting.

Though not a proven theory, this potential link between Scotland and Jews is certainly fascinating. Scotland, which in it's golden age produced Maxwell, Napier, Adam Smith, Alexander Graham Bell, and many other great thinkers, could have been a safe haven for Jews to come and get an education during the middle ages. It might very well have been the only place in Europe that did not expel or persecute the Jews.
And isn't it interesting that some Scottish names even sound a lot like Jewish names...Cowan, Hepburn, Stein... Should we be drinking Scotch whisky on Jewish holidays, rather than Manischewitz?

I am a Jewish historian. The author goes out on a limb on many different occasions to prove that Scotland was Jewish. Maybe there is a few instances a few people , but not the whole Scotland. Not a total waste of time if one is looking for some historical value. I would not recommend it if you didn't buy it already.

Is Tank Abbott MMA's Charles Bukowski?

I read Bar Brawler for the Co-Main Event (#CME if you nasty) Podcast book club. I didn't know what to expect, I really didn't. But at least Tank Abbott got published so how bad could it be? Then one of the co-hosts tweeted "it's not 'good' by any means". With my expectations suitably lowered, I dove into my Kindle edition. No, it wasn't good but it was... something. Gripping, exciting, stupefyingly compelling: I had to read more. I tweeted the other co-host "I hope he beats someone up in every chapter". As he responded, I certainly wasn't disappointed on that count.

With most chapters starting with the incessant "beep! beep! beep!" of Tank's, sorry Walter's, alarm and our protagonist then seemingly going through a Groundhog Day-like existence it all started to run together. The use of the present tense added to the tedium: wrestling his dog Adolf, riding the duct-taped Interceptor to the gym, hitting the heavy bag, working at the liquor store, cracking open a clip of "soldiers", making a "siren", cruising with a member of "Kaos" and then - inevitably, brutally - beating someone senseless outside a bar.

As much as I rooted for Walter to give the next loser the beat-down he was "begging for", I also found my distaste for him as a human being growing. Every evening he plots a new felony assault. Every day he drives desperately drunk.

But somehow, I also recognized the style: the kitchen-sink alcoholism and relentless monotony. Then I realized: Walter Foxx is to Tank Abbott what Hank Chinaski is to Charles Bukowski! In many respects, Bar Brawler is Abbott's 'Ham On Rye' or 'Factotum'. Don't get me wrong, there is a vast difference in literary standard but the similarity is there. Maybe Bukowski is even what Abbott was aiming for?

Regardless, I am a fan. And I'm definitely buying 'Street Fighter' and 'Cage Fighter' when they come out.

You get what you expect

well if your familiar with tank abbott, you get what you expect but nothing more. the main character gets drunk, fights, moans about life, hates on people. repeat this for 300 pages and you have the "novel" that is "Bar Brawler". The dialogue is really stiff and the book pretty repetitive. Alot of this book comes off unintentionally funny; everyone seems to be "begging" for a beating in the authors eyes. i used to be a bigger fan of tank, but after this he seems really obnoxious.

If this is to be the begining of a trilogy its a weak start.

although i still give it a positive review overall due to still being a tank fan, not having read a book anything like this, and i did enjoyed all the street scraps with in the book.

It is what it is.

Interesting...but writing prowess lacking...

As a long time MMA fan since 1993 (UFC 1) I was very interested in this book. This man (tank) is a ferocious warrior and I suspected this "fictional" account was actually his own life story thinly disguised. The book is full of fight/brawl stories and keeps you reading. The one drawback to the book is the authors lack of writing prowess. By that I mean he is very primitive in the way he words his story. It is a blunt, raw story about a beast that lives for fighting. If you were a fan of the early UFC, I would recommend this book.
