The workbook is ideally suited for courses in which a reverse engineering design project is assigned. This book contains clear and easy to understand instructions that enable the students to robustly learn the main features of SOLIDWORKS, with little or no instructor input.

Constructible and perverse sheaves are the algebraic counterpart of the decomposition of a singular space into smooth manifolds, a great geometrical idea due to R. Thom and H. Whitney. These sheaves, generalizing the local systems that are so ubiquitous in mathematics, have powerful applications to the topology of such singular spaces (mainly algebraic and analytic complex varieties).

This introduction to the subject can be regarded as a textbook on "Modern Algebraic Topology'', which treats the cohomology of spaces with sheaf coefficients (as opposed to the classical constant coefficient cohomology).

The first five chapters introduce derived categories, direct and inverse images of sheaf complexes, Verdier duality, constructible and perverse sheaves, vanishing and characteristic cycles. They also discuss relations to D-modules and intersection cohomology. The final chapters apply this powerful tool to the study of the topology of singularities, of polynomial functions and of hyperplane arrangements.

Some fundamental results, for which excellent sources exist, are not proved but just stated and illustrated by examples and corollaries. In this way, the reader is guided rather quickly from the A-B-C of the theory to current research questions, supported in this by a wealth of examples and exercises.

About the Author

Biography Alexandru Dimca

Alexandru Dimca obtained his PhD in 1981 from the University of Bucharest. His field of interest is the topology of algebraic varieties, singularities of spaces and maps, Hodge theory and D-modules.

Dimca has been a visiting member of the Max Planck Institute in Bonn and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He is the author of three monographs and over 60 research papers published in math journals all over the world.

Dimca has extensively taught at universities in Romania, Australia, the USA, and France, and he uses this teaching experience to convey effectively, to a wider mathematical community, the abstract and difficult ideas of algebraic topology.

Moral lessons from neurosurgeries

Each chapter of this small book is a short story from the extraordinary life of an experienced neurosurgeon. Although the stories provide a medical overview of each surgery performed, it's the spiritual lesson that the author learned from each surgery that he primarily wishes to relate. Indeed, each story could be a stand-alone Sunday sermon.

A must read!

I could not stop reading once I started! What wonderful words of wisdom and knowledge that we all need for life! I loved the peek into Dr. Lee Warren's private thoughts, as he cared for his patients! I was so touched and blessed by the wonderful stories, saddened by the losses, but uplifted by the power of God's word!

Let's Be Honest Here...

I read this book as a favor to the author. Old school buddies etc. I didn't know what to expect but reading something a brain surgeon writes wasn't, well, let's just say I didn't expect something on my level. I was wrong.

This book grabbed me from the tongue in cheek intro to deep into the chapters. Laughter, tears, deep thoughts and inspiration were all bound together in this book. You could hardly call me a scientific mind, but thankfully I didn't need to be a brain surgeon to enjoy it! I'll be passing it along to others to read as well. I learned much that I didn't realize about the human brain and though I share the author's faith, I'd not looked at it from the same angles he wrote about in this book. Major kudos to Dr. Warren (still hard calling him that!) for writing something worth reading. His insights are excellent and this was a fun and very entertaining read. I'll be quoting him and borrowing his stories guaranteed!

One Third of the book is a massive table of ticker symbols with listed Options.

Decent Book. I own both the digital and physical copy. I'm quite angered because roughly one third of the book is just a huge options table. This could've been left out completely. It just adds extra pages to what would otherwise be a decent options guide. And when I say I'm quite angered, I'm really really angered. There's simply no reason to waste that many pages on useless tables when one can find a list of optionable securities online.
