decent intro to sports betting

This introductory level book explains the various bets you can make, and does a good job explaining why most bettors lose in the long run, identifying countless fallacies relied on by losing bettors. The author also identifies various metrics that can be used to evaluate teams. Unfortunately this portion is not well organized and reads like a stream of consciousness. Still, there are a few good things to think about (which most winning better already consider). It would have been nice to see a method to put all these different ideas together into one opinion on a game.

I know nothing about the NFL, but last season I made a pretty decent profit betting on it by following the advice from Matt Rudnitsky's pieces at SportsGrid.

Now, that doesn't mean that you should sell all your belongings and go an stick all the money on whatever picks he comes up with this week. That kind of "easy money" or "sure fire winner" mentality is exactly what Matt demolishes in this book. Betting on sports (especially the NFL) is hard, but if you are a casual gambler and want to increase your chances of turning a profit then you should read this book and heed the advice.

The book focuses mostly on NFL but there is lots of good general advice on how to approach betting on any sport, as well as some satisfying ridicule of the inane analysis served up by most pundits and "experts.

If you want to improve your sports betting, especially if you have an interest in the NFL, this book is a must read.

Have checked out a bunch of these betting advice books, and this one trumps them all. Especially recommended for someone trying to learn/get into betting. Gives you such a solid foundation. Starts off with basics and then gets into more advanced tips that will give you an edge! Also, very clearly written, and is an easy read!

***MINOR SPOILERS*** Went haywire halfway through book

Let me just say, the first half or so in the book I would rate a 3 1/2 - 4 stars. The author did a great job capturing the beginning of how a young abusive relationship would typically start off. I felt for Laylah tremendously. I had hoped when she had a few opportunities to expose Jay for the POS he his, she'd take the chance and do it. I understand how it wasn't easy for her to say or do something to get help. Like most women, fear of the unknown of what he'd do, not only to themselves, but to family and friends are one of the main reasons of making them stay. Very heartfelt, and pretty realistic. I knew going in that Layla wasn't going to be a strong, ruthless, kick a%$ heroine, but her naivety was genuine.

Now, to explain why my low rating. ****Minor spoilers below****

This is where it went downhill. The new future love interest. WHY!?! Not only would their relationship cause MORE chaos and unnecessary drama (DUH) it was pretty much uncalled for. I cant get much further into it w/o major spoilers on who the H is, but I can rant and rant how this H choice was a bad one. That and the fact they've said a few words to each other over time and on the 3rd date/outing together its possible I love you's? NO, just no. Not feeling the insta-love thing all of a sudden At least with Jay, Laylah had a crush/feelings for him before he asked her out. Even when Jay first said I love you to Layah, she acknowledged to herself that she liked him, yea, but didn't think she loved him. And this was before Jay turned violent. After that, it was an automatic response to Jay's, not bc she felt it, she feared his response if she didn't say it back.

I dunno, it would have been much more enjoyable with a different H, especially one that didn't profess his love so soon. Different ending with how Jay was finally exposed, and a conclusion that didn't feel so rushed.

Mine in a great way!!!

Wow I purchased this book yesterday and I just finished it. This book held me captive from the first page. Even when I found my eyelids closing I would struggle to reopen them and read just a bit more. I loved this story mind you there are tons of scenes of depravity and abuse that was terrible but unfortunately this happens to women and even men in real life so I read through and I'm happy I did. I loved Ryan and Layla together. Jay is and will always be a p.o.s. to me. Nina was a good friend. I hope MRS KNIGHT writes more books because I will definitely read them

Just meh

The book started out enjoyable (as much as one can enjoy this type of context) however, it left a little to be desired. It just felt unfinished to me and a lot of explaining needed to be done. Without giving any spoilers I was left with more questions than answers. I don't know if there is supposed to be a second book or not but I feel almost cheated. If there is a second book I don't know if I would read it based on the first one but I feel like I might just to get a better conclusion.

Hitting a Felt Need Through Research

In "Hitting a Moving Target : Preaching to the Changing Needs of Your Church" Richard Ezell seeks to help pastors and other Christian public speakers better relate to their congregations. Ezell uses the analogy of an arrow hitting a target to illustrate what Christian public speakers need to do to communicate effectively. Ezell urges that pastors research the area they live in according to factors such as geography, socio-economic status, age, etc. in order to understand their community. Then, the pastor is to find the same information for his particular church through the use of surveys. The pastor is to compare the two groups and structure his sermons to meet the "felt needs" of his parishoners. Ezell rehashes many of the popular church growth writings that are in print. However, Ezell does offer something that not many others do-- he understands people that are in transitional jobs that keep them from developing roots in churches because they move often. Unless this is the case for your congregation, I would not reccomend this book. If this describes your congregation, the book is probably worth the money.

A jewel of a book!

This is a fabulous book. I use it with my clients and have of course done the work myself. I am so glad it has been reprinted. Thom Rutledge's book/workbook can be used alone or in conjunction with a therapy practice. Serious work with lots of good writing to "lighten it up."

This is such a valuable book for individuals and therapists. As a psychologist, I have read and used any books on self-healing, shame and self-compassion and this is by far the most practical and most helpful.

A very helpful resource!

First off I want to say that anything Thom writes is worth it's weight in gold. I work in the area of eating disorders and recommend all of Thoms books to my clients. He knows what he is talking about. The name Thom Rutledge is synonymous with recovery from any addiction whether it be codependency, eating disorders, substance use etc. This handbook is so very helpful and allows the reader to work at their own pace. I hear from women all the time about how much they gained from not only reading this book but by working through it applying the tools to their lives. Thank you Thom!

Black reformers, however, channeled the feelings of hope instilled by a war that would "make the world safe for democracy" into efforts that challenged the structures of the status quo. In Entangled by White Supremacy: Reform in World War I–era South Carolina, historian Janet G. Hudson examines the complex racial and social dynamics at play during this pivotal period of U.S. history. With critical study of the early war mobilization efforts, public policy debates, and the state's political culture, Hudson illustrates how the politics of white supremacy hindered the reform efforts of both white and black activists. The World War I period was a complicated time in South Carolina―an era of prosperity and hope as well as fear and anxiety. As African Americans sought to change the social order, white reformers confronted the realization that their newfound economic opportunities could also erode their control. Hudson details how white supremacy formed an impenetrable barrier to progress in the region. Entangled by White Supremacy explains why white southerners failed to construct a progressive society by revealing the incompatibility of white reformers' twin goals of maintaining white supremacy and achieving progressive reform.
