It Worked for Me
By Troy Parfitt
A couple of summers ago, I took nearly three weeks and travelled all around Taiwan, an excursion which included three additional (or outlying) islands: Kinmen, Orchid Island, and Green Island. Before I left, I picked up a copy of this Lonely Planet, even though I had lived in Taiwan for nearly a decade. All told, I found this guidebook useful, hence I don't have any serious complaints about it, although I might if I were new to this country.

Absolutely, the volume could stand to be thicker. Taiwan is actually deceptively small; a round-island trip entails about 1,000 km of transport by bus, train, etc. And more places could have been listed in the "Places to Stay" sections. Having said that, there are loads of hotels (usually marked as such in English) in cities and towns in Taiwan, and Taiwanese people are so friendly (something that should become apparent to anyone soon after arrival) that inquiring at a place, say, next to a recommended inn that's booked up shouldn't be such a stretch. If you made it to Taiwan, you can make it into the lobby of large building marked HOTEL and ask if they have a room; really, you can. After all, a guidebook is meant to guide you, not to suck all the adventure out of travelling. And it's not like this is Sudan or something.

The book's maps were fine, and, as mentioned, the book was generally fine, too. One more suggestion, though, and admittedly its a very random one: Kinmen (an island in the Taiwan Strait) is such a confusing place to drive around (all the roads look the same/it's difficult to tell which direction you are going) that the writer(s) might want to suggest picking up a compass. Actually, a compass in any Chinese city is a great idea as the roads are usually laid out along compass points. How convenient. Oh, and one more thing...

Back in the good old days, Lonely Planets were much more honest in their assessments. If there was bugger all to do someplace, they would say so. Nowadays, all travel books have to hype destinations and hype them big, otherwise potential customers glancing through them might think, "That sounds like a dreadful country," before putting the book back on the shelf and heading off to the magazine rack. But at least with the Lonely Planet, it's easy to read between the lines. If the first listing in the "Things to See and Do" section is, say, a botanical garden, that might be a good indication that there just isn't a whole lot on offer in that particular town. Also, the writers provide routes and suggested itineraries at the beginning of the book. Another reviewer noted how only six hotels were listed under "Places to Stay" in Kaohsiung. 'How could that be' the reviewer wonders, 'in Taiwan's second largest city?' If they had looked more closely, they might have noticed that Kaohsiung failed to make it into any of the prescibed routes. Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink. Never mind the mediocre reviews. The Taiwan Lonely Planet is a decent guidebook. It shouldn't be confused with a tour guide.

Tons of information, but not enough pictures
By William Fabrizio
I bought both the National Geographic Traveler and Lonely Planet guides for Taiwan before working there for a month. While I was there, I found that National Geographic Traveler was more useful for planning places to go and things to do because it uses in depth highlights of tourist spots to visit and has full color photos and drawings throughout. However, I found that the Lonely Planet guide had more information, both useful and not. It had descriptions, hours of operations, and costs for many destinations that both tourists and residents would frequent. It could be described as an insider's guide of what to do in Taiwan, but the quantity of information was more than the quality. Lonely Planet's few color plates were okay, but not as helpful as those found in the National Geographic Traveler. This made the Lonely Planet harder to decide what to do from the many options provided because the choice was usually only based on a couple of sentences. The maps were better in Lonely Planet, but I ended up using a tourist map when I was in Taipei.

I recommend getting both. I found that I would see interesting photos in National Geographic Traveler and then look up the information in Lonely Planet to decide if it was worth doing or not.

Amateur Effort from Lonely Planet
By JoeLana
I have a love/ hate relationship with Lonely Planet guides. On one hand I detest the `budget backpackers are holier than thou" attitude which seems to permeate many of the guides' contributions, on the other I am remarkably impressed with their information, maps, attention to detail and notes of interest- hence I continue to reference them. Previous LP guides which I have used and swear by for their usefulness include previous editions of Thailand, Bangkok City guide, Bali & Lombok and India to name a few.

Lonely Planet's Taiwan guide in a word...sucks. There is just too much information lacking from this guide for it to be considered anything near complete. As an example, the section for the city of Kaohsiung ( the second largest city in Taiwan) had all of six (count `em) six entries for hotels- in a major metropolitan city, and one in which I counted at least twice that amount before I even left the train station grounds. Albeit the information that is actually provided is quite sound, the considerable amount of lacking details make this guide not much more useful than maps and guide given out free at Taiwan's Tourist Information centers. In fact, it is surprising just how many times the authors flat out advise you to go to various Tourist info centers to gather required information- rather than write about it themselves. To get an idea of just how spartan this guide is, one only needs to look at the mere size of it. Compare LP's Taiwan with LP's Thailand or Bali (both excellent publications). Then take into consideration the sheer size of the country. LP's Taiwan is about the size of LP's Bali, when it really should be a lot closer the size of LP's Thailand. Recommend you only borrow this one just to orient yourself prior to going, then head straight to the nearest tourist info center for the real scoop.

‘This is the original game of thrones’ George R.R. Martin

From the publishers that brought you A Game of Thrones comes the series that inspired George R.R. Martin’s epic work.

“Accursed! Accursed! You shall be accursed to the thirteenth generation!”

The Iron King – Philip the Fair – is as cold and silent, as handsome and unblinking as a statue. He governs his realm with an iron hand, but he cannot rule his own family: his sons are weak and their wives adulterous; while his red-blooded daughter Isabella is unhappily married to an English king who prefers the company of men.

A web of scandal, murder and intrigue is weaving itself around the Iron King; but his downfall will come from an unexpected quarter. Bent on the persecution of the rich and powerful Knights Templar, Philip sentences Grand Master Jacques Molay to be burned at the stake, thus drawing down upon himself a curse that will destroy his entire dynasty…

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Sporting an enthusiastic introduction by George R. R. Martin (in which he calls the book “the original game of thrones”), this is the first U.S. publication of the first volume of French novelist Druon’s seven-volume historical saga, collectively known as The Accursed Kings. Originally published in 1955, the novel is set in the year 1314. Philip IV, the king of France, has disbanded the Knights Templar, arresting, torturing, and executing most of them. Relations between France and England are as strained as they have ever been. Philip’s increasingly desperate search for money to pay his massive debts has virtually bankrupted the country. Against this sprawling backdrop, Druon tells the story of Robert of Artois, a French lord whose lands have been taken from him by his greedy aunt and whose efforts to reclaim his birthright will lead to all-out war between France and England. Unlike Martin’s multivolume Song of Fire and Ice, Druon’s saga is based on real history and features real people as its central characters. It’s historical fiction on a grand scale, full of political intrigue, family drama, and characters who, while drawn from life, are larger than it. Fans of historical epics who have not yet discovered Druon’s saga will be thrilled with this one. --David Pitt

Review

‘Iron kings and strangled queens, battles and betrayals, lies and lust, the curse of the Templars, the doom of a great dynasty – and all of it (well, most of it) straight from the pages of history, and believe me, the Starks and the Lannisters have nothing on the Capets and Plantagenets. Whether you are a history buff or a fantasy fan, Druon's epic will keep you turning pages. This was the original game of thrones’ George R.R. Martin

‘Blood-curdling tale of intrigue, murder, corruption and sexual passion’ The Sunday Times

‘Dramatic and colourful as a Dumas romance but stiffened by historical accuracy and political insight’ The Sunday Times

‘Barbaric, sensual, teeming with life, based in wide reading and sound scholarship…among the best historical novels’ The Times Literary Supplement

One of the best historical novels ever written.
By Tanya
This is the first (and probably, the best) in Druon's excellent series, Les Rois Maudits (The Accursed Kings), dealing with the demise of the Kapetian dynasty and the beginning of the 100-year War. The legend has it that after King Philippe the Fair (Philippe Le Beau) disbanded (and destroyed) the Order of the Templars, their Master, Jacques Molais, cursed Philippe and his seed as he was burned at the stake. At the time of the curse, Philippe was in great health and had three grown sons. Less than a quarter of a century later, the Kapetians ceded the throne to their cousins Valois--for the lack of male issue to take up the throne and the inability of female issue to do so (prior to Philippe's death, a woman could techincally rule France). What happened? That is precisely the subject of Les Rois Maudits--and the first book deals with the family from the last months of Philippe's reign and until the ascention of his oldest son, Louis X.
I read this book in one day. I was awed by the characters, particularly Philippe and his gorgeous daughter Isabelle, Queen of England (remember Braveheart--the pretty French princess?), and of course, Robert D'Artois and his evil cousin Magot. The only problem with it is that it definitely leaves you hanging in the end, simply making you go and read the second book--the Prisoner of Chateau Gayard.
I would highly recommend it--it is gripping, well-written, historically accurate.

the iron king
By Alla S.
"The Iron King" by Maurice Druon follows the intrigues, passions, murders, and backstabbing within the French dynasty in the 1300s. It was originally published in French in the 1950s, and is the first book in the Accursed Kings series (there are seven in all, and they follow the story of the dynasty after it's--you guessed it, cursed--in the first book, by the unfairly executed Grand Master Jacques de Molay).

I like historical fiction novels, and Druon's series was very popular when it was initially published. Though I've heard of it, it was my first time actually reading it. The title of the book, "The Iron King" refers to Philip IV (Philip the Fair), the King of France who has a fiery temper. After he is unable to overtake Jacques de Molay's Order of the Knights of Templar organization, the King gets his vengeance by sentencing Jacques and the rest of the senior participants of this organization to a lengthy jail sentence, and ultimately to burn at the stake. Jacques, whose organization was dismantled and life ruined, vows revenge. He curses the people who did this to him--the King of France (the Iron King), the Pope, and the King's Minister Guillame de Nogaret. As the story starts unfolding further, the curse begins to work--and, reminiscent to Agatha Christies "And then there were none," -the recipients of the curse start to die one by one.

Meanwhile, the Iron King's sons--Louis, King of Navarre and Charles, are being cuckolded by their cheating wives--Marguerite and Blanche. Worst of all, the cheating scandal is revealed to Isabella, the Iron King's daughter and sister to the cuckolded husbands. The informer, Robert III of Artois, seeks to fulfill his own agenda after losing a long battle over inheritance with the mother and aunt of the unfaithful wives, Mahaut, who also happens to be Robert's own aunt. If her daughters and niece lose favor with the Iron King, Mahaut's power will substantially weaken and Robert might be able to wrench away the inheritance.

Even though Isabella is married to a homosexual husband, the King of England Edward II and scarcely happy in her private life herself, she seeks Robert's help in getting evidence of their affairs and providing it to the King of France, her father. If the scandal gets revealed, then both the lives of the unfaithful wives and those of their lovers, the Aunay brothers, Gautier and Philippe, will be in danger.

Not everything gets wrapped up neatly (this is a series after all), and as the book ends, France's kingdom is left in turmoil. Though the writing style isn't easy on the eyes, the interesting storyline more than makes up for it. Looking forward to reading the second book, which will hopefully come out.

This is Not The Original Game of Thrones… It’s Even Better
By Charlie Brown
The Middle Ages are called the dark ages for a reason: there are often difficult to study, understand and to be able to grasp its impact on the shaping of the modern world. They are confusing, there are not that many reliable sources of research and those existing need a real expert on the field to bring us within reach of what it meant to be royalty at that time or to gravitate around royalty, to be Catholic, to be a Jew, to be rich or to be like the 99% of the rest of Europe: poor, hungry, sick, ignorant and surrounded by death as part of life, often more present than not. Maurice Druon accomplishes it, bringing us a superb work of fiction using non-fiction history as a framework. You must read the Iron King, as well as the other six books that complete the series of the Accursed Kings. This is not an option, it is something you should put in your bucket list and try to accomplish as soon as possible

The English translation has a foreword from George R. R. Martin, who will tell you he used Maurice’s work as inspiration for its A Song of Ice and Fire and for its TV version, Game of Thrones. Even if it says it there in the cover and may seem like a plot from the publishers to try to sell you a 1950’s forgotten literary jewel, it is not a marketing plot or a favor from George R.R, it is true: If you watched Game of Thrones, you will see that it is nothing more than a repetition, I would even say a censored and watered down repetition of the constant plots, conspiracies, treasons and betrayals that are an integral part of the Accursed Kings and this period of European history. There is no Games of Thrones without the Accursed Kings, and they are even worse because all these terrible things and events not only happened for real and repeated over and over, but also mostly happened amongst members of the same family! There are no inviolable principles, or better yet, there are no principles at all, everything is valid and things are often done without any remorse.

The only problem is that only three of the books have been translated to English (from its original French): The Iron King, the Strangled Queen and the Poisoned Crown. The 4th book, The Royal Succession is due on November 4th, and the 5th book, the She Wolf, will only come out in late 2015. There is no release date for the 6th and 7th books, which is a shame because you need to read the entire series to become full circle on the plot and see the full consequences of Philippe the Fair decisions and the Templar’s Curse. If you are lucky enough like me, who happens to be fully fluent in Spanish, you can finish the series sooner as the Spanish translation has been around for many years now. But worse case you do the A Song of Ice and Fire thing and wait a few years to read it all, it is worth it

Great for All Who Know a Non or Low Verbal Child!!
By H. Kay
Review by Joleen Fernald, MS CCC-SLP, BRS-CL or PhD/ABD CCC-SLP, BRS-CL:

Pat Mervine's book, How Katie Got a Voice is a treasure in many ways. Katie is a new student at an elementary school where everyone has a nickname based on their gifts and strengths. Katie, whose disability is not specifically named, uses a wheelchair for mobility and is unable to speak. Therefore her peers, who want to include her by giving her a nickname, are unable to determine Katie's affinities and are stuck in a quandary as to what to do.

"How Katie Got a Voice" has many purposes including as a teaching tool for children and adults alike. As a way of educating about the value of accepting others who are different and explaining self-determination and advocacy from a disability rights perspective, this book is a marvelous resource. A discussion guide is available on [...] along with a Reader's Theater version of the book, Katie's Disability Etiquette video, and other instructional materials.

The book is written for children in upper elementary grades (grades 3 - 6). There is a lot of writing on each page, which would be difficult for younger readers. I read the book with my two daughters, ages 12 and 10. The anticipation of Katie's nickname built as we read each page. They asked wonderful questions about Katie throughout the story and seemed to enjoy the discussion about respecting those with differences at the end of the book. As a speech language pathologist, I can see using this book to help others learn about children with communication disorders.

As a speech language pathologist I sympathized with Katie that she is in fourth grade before "receiving her voice" (i.e. augmentative communication device). This situation is all too familiar and though this story is fiction, many children and families find that access to AAC is delayed for a multitude of reasons. Ultimately, the purpose of the book is to help foster a sense of acceptance and belonging, which the story does well. It's a great addition to any speech and language pathologist, educator, or parent's library.

"If you had the right connections in this town, you could kill most anybody you wanted and get away with it." - DEL SMITH
Del Smith is just one of a dozen or so unforgettable characters who appear in this much-heralded tale of murder among the spectacular beauty of Tennessee's Smokey Mountains.
It's all here - massive drug deals, orgies in a hillside mansion, prison escapes, violent death and a cast of characters worthy of a Tennessee Williams play. In the midst of it all appear a local high society beauty, and the hell-raisin' youngest son of the author's oldest friend. Together they create a crime that is still being talked about in the Great Smokies many years later.
In MAD NOTIONS, John Lawrence Reynolds strips away layers of lies, deception and hypocrisy to expose the dark side of the American dream in a story that grows ever more fascinating and bizarre on its way to a stunning conclusion.

Terrific telling of a horrific murder
By Craig Clarke
"Every man is wise when attacked by a mad dog; fewer when pursued by a mad woman.
Only the wisest survive when attacked by a mad notion." --Robertson Davies
It's unfortunate that, so far, the only people that seem to be reading this book are ones who either knew--or are related to--the people involved (myself included). I say this is unfortunate because John Lawrence Reynolds has written a terrific narrative that deserves to be read by anyone with interest in the true crime genre. His relative closeness to the proceedings--his friend is Brett Rae's father and Reynolds was lucky in getting some of the relatives to help him out with the facts--makes for an engrossing insider's view of one of the worst scandals in East Tennessee's history. Mad Notions could be the best first-person true crime book since Ann Rule's The Stranger Beside Me.
Alicia Shayne Good was adopted into a life of affluence when her mother left a volatile relationship with Shayne's father and married local banker Brent Mills from Sevier County, Tennessee. Shayne Mills was popular, intelligent, beautiful (the winner of a Junior Miss competition), and had the best of everything. Soon, however, events (starting with the suspicious death of Mills) conspired to take away Shayne's privilege, beginning her downward spiral. Poor Kelly Lovera, it seems, simply got in her way. A smart small-town boy who was making good, Kelly had just become a lecturer at the local Pellissippi College in Knoxville when Shayne began plotting his death. But she couldn't do it alone, so she began attempting to manipulate her many lovers into assisting her. Unfortunately for Brett Rae, he was in love with Shayne and would do anything she asked.
And so November, 1994, found Kelly Lovera dead in his black Jeep on the side of an embankment. What happened exactly is unknown, due to the conflicting reports of those involved, but Reynolds paints a clear portrait of the before and after, while also showing the effects of how a brutal murder in this small town community was not that odd an occurrence, given the area's history of cover-ups. It's not hard to begin making judgments on behavior after the fact--and to sympathize with those we consider unjustly wronged--but one must remember that this is all after Reynolds has done all the work for us. 20/20 hindsight.
Reynolds uses his award-winning mystery-writing skills (he has won two Arthur Ellis Awards for his books The Man Who Murdered God and Gypsy Sins) to present the events occurring in Mad Notions in a logical progression that ties everything together, presenting it in an easily understandable progression that leads to great reading. He displays remarkable restraint and doesn't go for the obvious sensationalist tack that often tarnishes otherwise good writing in this genre. There is a fascinating story here that doesn't need any assistance and Reynolds lets its own fast-paced, suspenseful nature take the fore. His first-person narration makes the reading that much more immediate, and his use of language makes for vivid description of the parties involved and of the Great Smoky Mountains setting. Even upon finishing the first reading, the reader will believe that he or she has actually met these people, and the irony is not lost on Reynolds that such heinous happenings went on in such beautiful country. Mad Notions is destined to be one of those books that gets unreserved recommendations from stranger to stranger.

Mad Notions: A true tale of Murder & Mahem
By Barbara G. Lovera
I received the book and read it in one day. The book was well researched and acurate but for only a couple of indescrepencies that did not effect the outcome. The author described the victim very well considering he never met him. I should know, the victim is my stepson whom I love and miss dearly. I read the book with tears in my eyes as I relived the hellish account of the murder and trial we went through. I could see each character and events vividly in my mind. Now when our friends ask many questions that arise, we simply tell them to read the book for all the answers. The reality of it is shocking to our family, friends, us and especially the greatest victims of all-our grandchildren. The first murder in Sevierville, Tenn. in 33 years. Hopefully the last - anywhere!!

One of the best true crime stories I have read
By Admn Lynn
I live in Indiana but own a home in Gatlinburg. I have been a regular visitor for more than 40 years to Sevier County. I am an avid true crime reader and so I picked this book up at a bookstore in Sevier County while I was there last year. It was a great read. I finished the book before I left to go back to Indiana, so it was hard to put down. Kudos to the author for writing this book, telling an important story, and giving some insight to the "back-door" history of Sevier County. I learned a lot!
