About the Author
Peter McLean was born near London in 1972, the son of a bank manager and an English teacher. He went to school in the shadow of Norwich Cathedral where he spent most of his time making up stories. By the time he left school this was probably the thing he was best at, alongside the Taoist kung fu he had begun studying since the age of 13.
He grew up in the Norwich alternative scene, alternating dingy nightclubs with studying martial arts and practical magic.
He has since grown up a bit, if not a lot, and now works in corporate datacentre outsourcing for a major American multinational company. He is married to Diane and is still making up stories.

Hangdog Hero Pilots Great Supernatural Noir

It’s safe to say that Don Drake, a London-based diabolist-turned-hit-man for hire, has certainly made a lousy life for himself. He’s stuck in a miserable partnership with a raucous, foul-mouthed archdemon that he keeps locked in his study; he self-medicates with alcohol to forget the people he’s killed; he’s hung-up on an old girlfriend who won’t give him the time of day; and he’s under the thumb of Wormwood, a nasty demon and local club-owner whom he happens to owe quite a bit of money. Yes, life is hell. And it’s about to get a lot worse: before the story ends, Drake will find himself tied to a chair and interrogated with a power-drill; seduced by a kinky red-head with a thing for whips; get jumped outside a night club and beaten up by aforementioned red-head; and contend with a nearly-fallen angel who has an annoying penchant for Russian cigarettes. And that’s all before a climactic trip to the underworld. What’s a demon-plagued magician to do if he wants to survive in this business?
I have to say, I really enjoyed this novel. When the story first opened, I thought Drake was going to be just another stoic Sam Spade type. Not so! Imagine if Jesse Pinkman, the young, sensitive delinquent hero of Breaking Bad, was in the soul-destroying business of dark magic instead of making meth. Yes, you’re right. It wouldn’t end well. And unfortunately, this too is the case for Drake. Another thing I must mention is narration. With some first-person stories, a narrator describes events and you never really get a sense of his character. This author, however, does it right, allowing the hero’s hang-dog personality to really shine through as he narrates his ensuing misadventures with sarcasm and self-deprecation. Drake is a bang-up job indeed.
Now, while I could just haphazardly recommend this for any fan of urban fantasy, I won’t. The story deals with a variety of seedy characters, and the plot itself takes several dark turns. Therefore, I can really only recommend it for fans of dark fantasy, or for hard-boiled mystery lovers who don’t mind a lot of supernatural elements thrown into the mix.

Out Of My Genre, Into My Dark Fantasies!

Having challenged myself to read 26 books in 2016, Drake was my first read of the new year - and what a way to start! A step outside of my typical genre, I initially wondered if I'd be able to keep up with the subject matter without needing Google on speed-dial. I needn't have worried, Don Drake anticipated my lack of "other worldly knowledge" and kept me up to speed - without slowing down the action.
From one-liners that leave you smirking long after the fact, to complex, unpredictable characters that continue to develop far beyond the final page - Drake draws you in and doesn't let you go.
"All of them were very well dressed and various degrees of drunk, but in that well-behaved sort of way that only posh people seem to be able to manage."

This book is a little tough to review, as I'd normally pass on a book where the main character(Don Drake) can accurately be described as a scumbag who spends an awful lot of the story getting beat down(I normally like my protagonists to give the beat downs). What makes this a winner for me is the excellent writing and the way Drake is pretty hilariously self-depreciating. This is raunchy, foul humor and not for readers who aren't big on tons of bad language(I like it if done right). The Burned Man is a character all in itself and is quite funny in it's own way and the supporting cast is also very good. This will probably appeal to readers that like the Sandman Slim and Yancy Lazarus books. This apparently new author is now very much on my "to watch" list and I can't wait to see what he comes out with next!
