Real Gears for the Real Gear Head

This book proved to be slightly over simplified to me as a designer. However, in today's world, I am just thankful that someone takes the time to set a subject down on real paper, that I don't have to read a screen blurry eyed until midnight to get the one or two facts I'm looking for. A great manga starter book

I received this book as a gift from my sister, I like to draw and I love manga so I was curious about it and started it immediately. The introduction mainly tells you about the history of manga, different types of manga, and then you get different art techniques and tips which was actually really helpful, before a big section with over 100 lessons on drawing different parts of the anatomy, and then lessons on drawing everything you learned into a character! It even has a game to integrate different styles.

Pros:
1. It's very well laid out and easy to follow, I'm not naturally talented, but the book is not confusing for me and the steps are all there, no "Draw a circle - now draw the rest of the owl" type stuff. Very clear instructions, line by line drawing, techniques, everything that can actually show you how to get from point A. to point B. And with your own work!

2. Everything is adorable. Usually when you buy a how-to-draw book it's a little bit intimidating, but this one's very easy going, the art is fun and very well done, and adds to the instructions rather than just being there to show you how much the artist is better than you.

3. I really like that the artist has a YouTube channel with additional instructions

4. The information on drawing eyes, hands, and faces is really extensive, more so than I was expecting. Because these are all difficult parts for me, the extra time and lessons were very much appreciated.

5. The book is surprisingly big, there are lots of lessons. It says 128 pages but every page is huge, and you get drawing lessons on each one.

6. The game is a lot of fun, and really great if you're like me and don't know what to draw

7. I can definitely draw manga characters using this book

Cons:
1. I will have to buy more art supplies. The tips on inking and different types of pencils really make me want to up my game.
2. While there are a ton of lessons, I do wish it had a bit more information on drawing outfits,

10/10 would buy again. I'm already seeing improvements on my manga style, and I can't wait to keep practicing.

This book is well put together and I highly recommend it.

The instructions are easy to understand and is packed with useful little tips for improving your manga drawings. The pages are filled with step-by-step illustrations to help beginners follow along with the instructions. You never get lost between steps and the chapters/content is well organized to help with your progression.

Aside from demonstrating the basics on how to draw manga characters (normal sized and chibi), the book covers a variety of topics such as
- creating hair styles
- drawing clothing details properly
- mapping facial expressions correctly
- manga inking and shading techniques
- idea generation for interesting and unique characters
- creating polished pictures
- creating well constructed manga pages with multiple panels

I love it

I don't have a lot of experience with how to draw manga books but this one is exactly what I was hoping for! I think it's worth the money just for the art if you like chibis and manga. Cute drawings on every page.The fire athlete is so hot! The instructions are easy to follow, lots of step by step and I didn't get lost once, and everything was so much fun, I really wish I could go get in person lessons now. I follow Mistiqarts on YouTube which is why I pre-ordered it and then it arrived a full month before it said it would ship. I was really surprised by how big the book is, it says it's only 128 pages but there are a LOT of lessons and they're all really big and easy to see, not like the little pocket drawing guides you see a lot. Super excited so far and I can't wait to draw something else.

It's not so much that there is anything necessarily new for those who are already familiar with Stanislavsky, but it is the approach that Dr. Merlin takes to present the material in a very accessible and organized way and her ability to perhaps correct some misconceptions about Stanislavsky and his views on the art of acting.

The toolkit is just that - tools for an actor (or director or student or whomever) to evaluate and use when needed. Merlin does not preach Stanislavsky's system as gospel, and neither did Stanislavsky himself. Instead this book becomes your kit full of "trays" of various tools that may or may not come in handy when an acting challenge arises. Some tools you may like and use all of the time without fail, others you may leave in the toolkit in favor of supplementing/replacing with a different approach from another source that works as a better tool for you.

It is the ease of attitude and frankness with the material that won me over with this book and Merlin's personal take on some of the tools that she has found useful or not useful in her own career.

Stanislavsky is too often misunderstood because of our own narrowness to pick and choose segments of his writings and take them out of context without evaluating the entire scope of his ideology - he was a brilliant pioneer in the advancement of the art of acting and Merlin does an excellent job of conveying his spirit through her thoughtful book and transforming his ideas into manageable tools that are so useful for any theatre practitioner today.

A review of the book, not the belief system

Books like this frequently encounter distorted reviews from people that are not reviewing the book itself but are offering an opinion on the validity of the belief system. Therefore my review will be a review of the book, and how effectively it provides what it attempted to provide, and will not be a review of the validity of the belief system one way or the other.

Something I hear from quite a few people who are interested in becoming practitioners of this belief system is a desire for very clear application steps and exercises to help facilitate the process of effectively visualizing what it is they wish to attract.

I believe this book provides exactly that. The book describes a wide range of practical exercises that one can employ to attempt to attract their desires. There will be exercises for people that are motivated by visual cues, audible cues, kinesthetic, etc.

Each exercise is explained clearly and concisely, as is the rationale behind each one of them and how it applies to effectively applying the concepts of the Law of Attraction belief system.

It can easily be used as an effective reference book, with any desired piece of information being very easy to find.

I noticed the book does refer to youtube links in the mind movie section, and it is certainly possible that those links will not always work as youtube videos are very subject to being taken down. I do hope the author has accounted for this, at least in the kindle version and intends to update those links as necessary.

Wow is all I can say! This book is so incredibly helpful and most importantly PRACTICAL!! This book is like gold mine for anyone who is ready to change their life. I have read several books on the LOA and watched several movies. I know the content very well but like most others I found it to be a little impractical. With these thirty exercises, they help to bridge the gap with practicing the LOA. I love that each exercise can be applied to each area of your life. There are so easy to do, yet they will have a profound impact on your life! I'm excited to implement these changes and I want to say thank you to Ms. Shapely. I appreciate this book!

This Book Works!!!

I'm not even halfway through the book, but I've been practicing the exercises that resonate with me so far and the changes I've seen come into my life have been astounding. I'm making money with little effort on my part and I've gone from seeing my dream of owning my own business as a goal that I have for 3 years from now to 3 months from now.

Not only are these exercises easy to do (they take no time and they're fun), I feel like I'm on Cloud 9 which is speeding everything up. I love it!

Of course I'm a human being so I still have negative thoughts. There are people who aren't my favorite, situations I don't love, and I'm not a morning person. But I can laugh about these things now and I'm able to see the good in the people who I struggle to interact with; what's even better is that those interactions become fewer and fewer as time goes on.

If you are stuck in your LOA, definitely invest in this book. I've only been reading it for 4 days and what's come into my life blows me away!

A track design book for all model railroaders.

I purchased the "How To Design A Small Switching Layout" and found it chuck full of good advice. First, the way the material is presented piece by piece from simple to more detailed information and finally culminating in the design of an actual layout utilizing examples from each chapter is very helpful for both the "newbie" and experienced modeler to keep thing in focus as they plan a layout. This type of presentation provides the reader with a feeling of not only accomplishment but encouragement to help him get started on his own layout using examples from the book.

Secondly, I found the chapters on "Scenery Only" Zones, Industry Selection and Planning and Rough in Your Structure Locations the best. I still need to work on the attached plan to expand my scenery only zones but he importantly pointed out the differences of number of car spots for at least one large industry versus one large structure with only one or two spots or those with the same car types rather than a multi car type industry like a food processor. I have to admit I am still a "sucker" for industries that use reefers and tanks and he picked a good one to illustrate his point especially for modern prototypes.

Third, the chapter "Now For The Track" encouraged me (as a "former"?) N scaler to be prepared to accept not only larger radius curves but #6 turnouts as minimum to ensure good, trouble free operation and a realistic look. This is one area I am having a bit of trouble adapting to in HO...how much bigger everything is and how much more room is required to build even a small simple HO layout. I believe that if I make sure there are one or two scenery only zones, hold the number of structures to a minimum and utilize only a couple of small foreground industries and three or four larger, space saving ones I can design and build an interesting nicely detailed switching layout with a couple of options for continuous operations. Lance's books will help keep me focused as I begin this adventure.

How to Design a Small Switching Layout by Lance Mindheim

One would think that Mr. Mindheim, a professional layout designer-builder, is trying to put himself out of business. Having published two superb track plan books that set a new standard for that genre, he has now clearly and concisely explained how to design `em yourself. For all the bloviation out there about layout design, this two-hour "read" says and shows more really useful stuff in 68 pages than you're likely to dig up in a month of web searches. As I read, I quickly came to understand why some layouts look and "feel" good and why the prototype and Mindheim use certain track configurations. Even if you have your own layout, you'll likely gain a greater understanding of your own and your colleagues' layouts and why their aesthetics and operation work the way they do, after having read this book. Although "How to Design" is a bit longer than Mindheim's previous books, it still benefits from an efficiency of language that makes a seemingly-opaque topic quite clear. This book is a very good value.

Empowering the Average Modeler

I've been wanting to write this review for a couple of weeks now, but every time I pick up Lance Mindheim's "How to Design a Small Switching Layout" a new facet or idea has caught my attention--and stoked my enthusiasm.
Every design work is a reflection of its author's philosophy, and Lance's philosophy provides a refreshing note of simplicity and practicality at a time when most layout design books focus on huge, gadget-filled plans. Indeed, one of the thngs that makes this 72-page softcover compendium not only enjoyable but significant is Lance's ability to empower the modeler whose space, budget, skills and available time place him or her in the 'average' category. This is a welcome and much-needed bit of validation for those of us who don't have a gymnasium and a trust fund to devote to our hobby.
Don't dismiss this as a 'beginner's book' (although a beginning modeler could use it to good effect). This reviewer has been a model railroader for many years and designed literally hundreds of layouts, and I keep finding ideas and insights in this book which are changing the way I view model railroad design.
Over the course of the book, Lance takes the reader step by step through the design of the Union Belt Line, an L-shaped switching layout which illustrates his principles. If you're feeling a little intimidated at the thought of doing your own original design, this layout (or one of the two bonus plans included with it) can be built verbatim from the book--and it looks like it would be a very practical, feasible and enjoyable railroad when it's done.
Even if you've got a gymnasium and trust fund to devote to the hobby, get this book and assimilate what Lance Mindheim has to say about cramming too much onto the layout, track spacing for mainlines and yards, making many design decisions before you ever pick up a pencil, the ratio of track and industries to scenery, engineering for maximum efficiency, and lots of other design principles which are applicable to all scales, sizes and types of layouts.
