Patsy M. Lightbown is Distinguished Professor Emerita at Concordia University in Montreal and Past President of the American Association for Applied Linguistics. Her research focuses on how instruction and feedback affect second-language acquisition in classrooms where the emphasis is on "communicative" or "content-based" language teaching. The contexts for her work have included elementary schools in Canada and, more recently, dual-language bilingual classes in the U.S. Nina Spada is Professor of Applied Linguistics at the Modern Language Centre, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto, Canada. A Gem of a Book for Teachers of Young Learners

I found out about 'Teaching Young Learners' by Annamaria Pinter from a section in Caroline T. Linse's book, 'Young Learners' edited by David Nunan, in which Nunan refers to her book for why teachers of young learners should do this and shouldn't do that. I thought that this book was a lot better than that and better than Nunan's own book, 'Teaching English to Young Learners.' Pinter is very generous and eloquent with her advice, which is well said and to the point. Pinter speaks from a combined position of research and practical teaching experience, which was very refreshing. I particularly liked the Recommended Reading and the Practical Teacher Resource sections that follow each chapter. I plan to read this book again and again. I can't say that is the case with the thirty odd plus and continually growing ELT mini library I have.

A Brilliant Novel Of Rural Texas

Having watched the movie twice (when it was first released, then again last year) I wanted to read the book. O course it is much better than the movie - which is great by itself. I live about 100 miles from the fictional setting of The Last Picture Show. I grew-up about 15 years after the novel is set, in a town only slightly larger than Thalia, Texas. So, I feel that I know these characters. McMurtry is able to draw vivid characters and settings that really speak to the reader. I have recently finished the sequel, Texasville and also highly recommend it to the reader.

Larry McMurtry's early successful book is a faithful depiction of small town Texas in the early 1950s. McMurtry lived the experience then wrote about it. We've all known Sonny and Duane and Jacy, and probably played some sport under Coach Popper. The very successful movie was a relatively faithful adaptation - Thalia becomes Anarene, but we all know it's really Archer City - and it's hard to read the book today without the mental image of the Bottoms brothers and Cybill Shepherd (as a mere teenager).

I cried as I read the first 14 pages of this book as the ideas expressed on those pages seemed to resonate so deeply within me that it was as if my soul was engaging ideas that we internally know, but do not consider sufficiently on an intellectual level. I believe that this book can help a us recognize and access the places within our consciousness that we do not take time to acknowledge or acquaint ourselves with, and serve to help us grow intellectually, emotionally and perhaps even spiritually.

great for tutoring with

I bought three different books to use this summer to tutor a high school student in Chemistry before she goes into the class in the fall. This one is by far the best. It is clear, concise, well-written, with good exercises and good explanations. It would be nice if it had a few more exercises so she could get a lot of practice, but other than that, I'm finding it an excellent resource.

Excellent chemistry book

I love this chemistry book. I can see it being a valuable resource in multiple situations. I purchased this book to go along with our homeschool curriculum for chemistry. I am using it to cover high school chemistry 1 & 2. I love it! It is well organized and easy to understand. Topics are explained well. I have not found any errors in it yet. I compared the topics to several high school chemistry student textbooks as well as two college editions and the same topics are covered in this book. Excellent review practice opportunity. It would also work nicely as a supplement in a college chemistry class. My college sophomore daughter borrowed it to help her study in her chem class. This book has many questions and answers to reinforce the concepts. Even if I did not have the chemistry textbooks I have, I believe this is a complete source of chemistry and could be used as a stand-alone resource.

Excellent resource if you need more then test practice questions

This book was purchased for my son in addition to the Stirling chemistry test question study guide. The Stirling is great if you want to establish a baseline prior to taking the actual CLEP & to see where you most need to focus. But, if you need to actually learn concepts or 'refresh' like my son does then I highly recommend this book.
College is too expensive to take courses that you don't truly need or don't apply to your major!

About the Author

Marianne M. Jennings (Phoenix, AZ) served as director of the Joan and David Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics at Arizona State University, and is professor of Legal and Ethical Studies in Business at Arizona State University. Her weekly columns have been syndicated around the country, and her work has appeared in publications including the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.

Excellent Reading

I would recommend this book for everyone--from teenagers to adults. It teaches us right from wrong, and the consequences we face if we make the wrong decisions. It teaches us that it really does "pay off" in the end if you DO make the right decisions.
I encourage anyone who is in business for themselves, or working for Fortune 500 companies to read this book. There are many great lessons to be learned!

I absolutely love the new book on ethics by Marianne M. Jennings. She uses a parody to follow four students through their life from high school to middle age. One student, Edgar, has a big rabbit as his conscience. The rabbit appears whenever Edgar faces an ethical dilemma. Edgar repeatedly struggles through life as he sees his three friends achieve major financial gains by being unethical. Ms. Jennings does a wonderful job of illustrating the long-term benefits of running one's personal and business decisions through an ethical filter prior to action. This book should be mandatory reading for all college students.
